Lightning bolt and backspacer had to go lol
Just curious. How do you go about selling your records? Discogs?
Depends on how much time, space and patience you have, but generally:

1) Discogs: you’ll probably get more bang for your buck selling individual records on Discogs. But you’ll need patience as things can sit for a while. They’ve also been consistently upping their fees, so they are taking a bigger and bigger cut. You’ll also need to know exactly what pressing you have, how to grade your records and be confident in it. You’ll need mailers, and know how to package a record. Brace yourself for nitpicky buyers depending on what you’re selling.

2) eBay: similar to Discogs

3) record store: you will get less per record from a record store but you can sell in bulk and quickly. And you don’t have to muck around with shipping. You’re essentially paying for convenience, and it’s up to you to find that number that you’re comfortable with.

4) message boards / Facebook marketplace: less fees, but always use PayPal/venmo goods and services payments. They will take a fee, but it’s less than Discogs/eBay and it will cover you from asshole buyers. It’s also a good way to sell bundles.

5) have a record garage sale: I’ve known people to just have a traditional garage sale for records and just post about it on local networks. Avoid all fees. But you’re also introducing yourself to haggling, theft, and general conversation with record collectors who can be absolutely draining
Thanks a lot! I typically go the record store route with the caveat that I will be selling at a discounted price. My local stores are pretty fair but typically you only receive 50% of the true value. For records I know hold more value I will try my luck with the other options.

That’s pretty much the route I go too. For example, if you needed to offload some Doors albums, you can easily do so at a record store, versus Discogs where you’re just gonna have to lowball your own price bc you’re selling against 1000 copies, unless you’re willing for it to sit there on your shelf for a little while in a lot of cases.

Though I have sold some weird stuff on Discogs. I found myself with a free copy of Exile On Main Street. A more recent copy that only had 1 of 2 discs. It took about 6 months but someone bought it for $14 bc they just wanted the cover in good condition.

Selling on Discogs sounds exhausting.

It can be but once you get a bunch of stuff on there and let it sit, it’s not bad

Although it’s probably not as exhausting as trying to get Pearl Jam tickets

Just move to Jersey or Oregon, get it done for you! Seems like a better option than owning a Tesla.

I had already used Discogs to catalogue my collection so it was easy to list them and it shows the sales history etc. when I realized some stuff I bought in 2011 - 2013 was OOP and in demand it made the decision easier, especially since I hadn’t played some of them since that time.

That’s the boat I’m in. Making a list of things that I don’t mind selling, albums I loved when I was 30 but can’t imagine listening to as I get older

I only just discovered that Discogs has a 'Random Item' link on your collection Tab. I was looking to build myself an app to hook into my Discogs collection to do this when I can't be bothered going through and trying to decide what to listen to - now I don't have to

You can shake your phone whilst in the app and it brings up a random item from your collection. :)

Used this today to select an album to listen to while throwing around kettlebells on the back lawn and it was great, after I got past albums I've only recently listened to - and an Adele album

Matt Vaughan from Easy Street Records on "Industry Shakedown" Anyone have any thoughts on this?
This seems really interesting and kinda relevant to this topic, feel free to move if not.

It's on my wishlist, but it's also on my "need to make room before you add anything list".
