It's not really about what they want to do, because BoB isn't stopping them doing anything. If they don't want to pay him, he can't make them. What they want to do is whatever's easiest, which is why he's on board.

- lots of things are being done at the same time in different rooms - vocal tracks, overdubs, edits
- no band member really knows what each song will sound like until BoB is done shaping/piecing it together
- lots of discussions afterward with themselves and BoB about things that were dropped, things that should be added, etc
- they (Stone, at least) liked what came out of BoB's distillation process

I get what they're saying; the mixing process can really re-shape a song. I'm just surprised that PJ seems to have such a divorced attitude when it comes to that aspect of the record's making.

Yup, sounds like they go in, play the instruments and that's it for another 4 years. Another day at the office. The fact that Stone said "As we're getting older... four years... might happen that way again bla bla bla", just thirty seconds into the interview, doesn't really help.

I kind of get that. I know by the time i'm done working on something I tend to be pretty open to suggestions and craving an editor. I can see the appeal of being able to surrender it to someone else. I'd rather it reflect their vision , but I get the appeal.

Then again I'm someone who likes the way the album sounds.

But to be fair, that would be true with any producer, because that's the way PJ want it. It's just that it would be easier to stomach if we liked the producer.

I think there's a difference between taking a step back and just seeming to have no idea what was going on during that process, which they seem to suggest. That being said, I don't blame O'Brien for that; it's the band's responsibility to set their level of involvement.

Agreed. I keep reminding myself that it's a lot more common to not be there when the mixing happens than you'd think. They still heard all the mixes and then the final one, and OK'd it.
