If they introduced Mara and every element in place except she’s Luke’s wife, there’d be outrage on one side and eye rolling ‘why even bother, it’s fan service’ on the other.

Look, I never read those dumb books. So, I have no idea who Mara Jade is. All I'm saying is they've done a great job with other "Legends" characters and it seems to me like the only reason you and others are against this is because of those dumb books. If the characters is a good character, then she has more going for her than the plot of some dumb book that doesn't matter anymore. And IF she's a great character, then I see no reason why you wouldn't want to introduce her into the official canon.

Fuck the "reaction." If that's even a little bit on their mind, we're all fucked.

I'm calling them dumb because they aren't canon. And also because I never read them and I'm mad at all of you for being petulant and not understanding this. And mostly because all of this is fiction and dumb because it isn't real at all and the levels of investment in this from all sides is so weird and dumb and silly that it makes me want to vomit.

I understand it Joe, i just DONT AGREE.
Those books arent dumb. If Mara Jade is a lovable character is for those books.

But if she's really "lovable" then it translates BEYOND the books. If she's lovable for only those books then she's not a great character.

Im not sure she is a great character. All im saying is, is she is back, bring HER back. Like Thrawn.

FOR THE RECORD:
I've never read those books and have zero investment in these characters. I'm fine if Mara Jade never shows up. I'm just defending the idea that she CAN show up and it won't be a big deal. If they decide not to use her ever, then whatever, fine. I really don't care. I'm just bothered, as a writer, that anyone would assert that it's impossible, because it just isn't.

You seem to be missing a very important point. The main one in fact.
In the books she’s brainwashed by Palpatine to hate skywalker, find him and kill him.
Blah blah blah bullshit story and cut to them ending up in love and marrying.
You can’t introduce that character at this point.
It makes fuck all sense.
Thrawn, sure. Easy in fact.
Mara? No. Would upend everything they’ve done with him.
-* make a special edition where that IS Mara jades grave he’s standing over at the end of TFA and he went into hiding cos she died boohoo. But shit ok he never mentioned her in TLJ.
Maybe she jilted him and THATS REALLY WHY he hid away from the galaxy.
See where it goes? Awful fan fic

There’s a million ways they can take her story, and still be in line with current canon. She has plenty going for her as a character.

I get it. I also know it won’t happen. And nobody really wants it.
Lucas LOATHED the character. She was one of his biggest regrets about letting the Eu and writers run around it unchecked.

To be fair I’m not against her turning up. If it’s written well cool. But it obviously can’t be on screen yet there’s plenty of scope in all the other media. Shrug

Mark Hamill has shown appreciation for Mara Jade several times.

I think after this movie, the books/series/games etc will start becoming more important to Star Wars than ever before.

You could have a story post ROTJ where part of Luke’s disillusionment with the Jedi way was their dogma and monk like existence and he dropped the no attachments rule.
Part of the Disney plus series adventures of Luke
Who knows.

Didn't Lucas approve all the main story stuff in the EU?

Nope. They had nobody overseeing it. He just saw it as an opportunity to keep the Star Wars brand alive. It was all read and reviewed by LFL and found to be such a pubic hair tangle of mess and contradiction and stupidity very often, it was relegated to legends.
