Do you feel the same about all vocalists, or is just Ed supremely talented? The music for your favorite PJ album wasn't even written by him.

Not all vocalists. But Pearl Jam in particular lives and dies by Eddie Vedder. Without him they are...nothing. He is one of the most outstanding rock vocalists ever, and nobody else in the band is close to being outstanding in their field. Guns n Roses for example is equal parts Slash and Axl. All 3 members of Rush contribute.

If they had kept Dave A, this could be a different story, but...Eddie Vedder just...he IS pearl jam. They are nothing without him.

Three of the four current members of PJ (not including Ed) were in successful bands with major label deals before Pearl Jam even formed. The only reason Pearl Jam really exists at all is because of that. Personally, I'm iffy on Soundgarden and can't stand Mother Love Bone, but to say they're "nothing" w/o Ed doesn't really make sense.

Ed is annoying, but he is the quintessential piece of the band. Sorry guys, but Mother Love Bone would never have been what PJ is/was. Soundgarden was never as good. And neither was the Wakka Wakka beach jammers.

At least in the early days, I think Ed needed Jeff and Stone more than they needed him. Of course they were all very fortunate to have found each other but Ed’s pre-Pearl Jam music doesn’t exactly portend greatness, whereas Jeff and Stone had been in two moderately successful bands already.

To be fair, its two of their three most popular albums, and he is recognizable for being part of their festival and unplugged appearances for Ten too.

My older cousin knows Dave A and thought he played on Ten because he was recognizable at that time period (I imagine, I was born in 1992)

You are even wrong about Gn'R. Without Izzy they would not have been remotely as good.


Dave A helped write Go, and is a talented drummer. Still, he's basically done nothing before or after spending three years and two albums with Pearl Jam. He's arguably not even the best Pearl Jam drummer.

Stone, Jeff and Matt have been in successful bands for more than 30 years. The band would have had success with the music from Ten and any of the vocalists from the top grunge bands. They have also all made great music without Ed. You're not giving them the credit they deserve. Just look at the difference between an Ed live show, and a Pearl Jam concert.

Do you only recognize virtuoso superstars as being "contributors" to their respective bands? Like, if they didn't appear shirtless on a poster at Sam Goody in 1992, they're essentially disposable?

Everybody contributes, but Eddie Vedder is the heart and soul of the band. Without Eddie they'd be not even close to as iconic as they are. He is a superstar. He is the only superstar.

Ed is a super star. he had a lot of things that the rest of the guys didnt, and a lot of what many other singers didnt. They are all lucky to have found each other and its okay to see that eddie vedder was pretty goddamn magical as a front man. I know he annoys a lot of you these days but its kind of silly to take away his brilliance as a front man and vocalist and spokesperson back in the day.
