Was there anyone waiting in line to get in when they started? Fenway looked jammed full by 7:30 on Sunday.
fuck if i know i'm on the other side of the country
Well, wherever you are, I think there's no way the tiny amount of bitching (if it exists at all) from the very small minority of people who were in line when they started "far outweighs" the bitching that they started too late.
i think we can agree that pearl jam fans, as a whole, just love to bitch

I’d like to spend the next 4 pages arguing this point

can't say for sure, but my guess is that PJ's status as an arena-filling independent band effectively makes this financially infeasible for smaller bands to tag along
Only seven shows across a month probably doesn't help that situation then? I will fully admit that I don't know much about the logistics of having an opening act.

they easily could've done local openers...Buffalo Tom would've been perfect for Boston (also would've negated PJ having to waste time in their own set to do one of their songs)...you could've had Mudhoney (for example) open up Seattle and Montana....not sure about Chicago but I'm sure there's some Chicago or midwest band that would've jumped at the chance to open for PJ while getting to play at Wrigley

Having an opener certainly seems like it would have been possible - Foo Fighters had two per night at Fenway in July with a 5:30pm start. Buffalo Tom could have opened one night and someone like Belly or Mission of Burma the other.
Having Band of Horses on the 2010 tour really helped set the tone for a great night - same with My Morning Jacket in 2006.

why did they stop with the opening bands, for real? my wife asked me that at the seattle shows, and i had no idea. seemed like if it was a travel/expense thing, seattle of all places could have had at least mudhoney open.

When did they first start going without them, 2013?

2013 does seem like the beginning of the Evening with concept, though Midlake opened two of the '13 shows and Mudhoney opened the entire Pacific NW leg of the tour.

I mean, isn't Post Riot Act Money Grab taken to a new level the obvious answer?

i'd assume.
but re: It's OK tag on Daughter... i have an inside scoop on part of the reason they keep playing that, and it's anti-PRAMG

I was there night two and a staffer told me that it's a policy to let fans in early so the venue can make as much money as it can selling beverages, food, merch. And it's like that at every Fenway concert. Bands arrive from the Four Seasons in a black SUV near the Sox players parking lot. It's show business, folks.

fans have a right to be pissed when a band that ceaselessly positions itself as the vanguard of the moral high ground willfully misleads them
buy stuff

As someone who irrationally hates how regularly they ruin Daughter with it, I’m curious to know the reason.
Oh wait - is it a royalties thing for Fred Cole’s family?

Pearl jam didn’t come on until 8-9 all over Europe. Yet doors open anywhere from 6/7. That’s always been the case.
Your ticket said 630 means the gate openining time. And probably printed that time because of possible congestion in such a venue and stragglers.

It is the strangest thing ever, people are bullshit about something that has been common practice forever.
