I had the same reaction to that line.

Maybe I’m unfairly comparing his onstage demeanor to how he acted in the 90’s, but for as long as I can remember after that, he just hasn’t looked like he’s having any sort of fun up there. Instead, it looks like he’s just going through the motions. There’s very little interaction on stage with the rest of the band, there’s no interaction at all with the crowd, he mostly stays by himself on the right, and I don’t think that he’s smiled in decades. Maybe I’m wrong. But he always comes across to me that he’s only there because the rest of the band decided they wanted to be there. Also, he seems generally annoyed every time Ed opens his mouth to address the crowd (but then again, Ed annoys me too).

he was having a blast in every show i went to. Specially in ACL 09. But he was super happy in those 05 shows too.

Stone's groove influence used to be all over Pearl Jam, I definitely feel like casual fans dropped away as it did

just finished that interview, very cool one...i love how exited he is with both PS and PJ. and getting to finish that Brad album too...

Bout the sexy songs like Stone called them....there is a big difference from something he can write for Brad and something for PJ i think. I do think everytime they tried to get a little funkier they nailed it, with songs like You Are for example.

I’ve heard it.

No band has the right to be this good at this point in their lifespan.

But they are. Somehow.

You’ll be waiting for it tho.

Gotcha. Stone definitely scans as a bit more serious/introverted than the other guys in the band, but I've never read that as bitterness or poutiness or anything like that. If anything I think the contrast you're describing stems less from Stone himself becoming increasingly sour and more from PJ shows in general, and Ed in particular, becoming hammier and hammier over the years. He's never seemed cynical or jaded in interviews to me.

Stone constantly gushes about eds talent and abilities. Its easy for some who havent cared much for pj in the past 15 years to put it all on Ed as they see stone writing less and less over the years for the band.

I worry that Stone's gushing about Ed's talents is as much (perhaps more) to do with how easily he seems to defer to people he highly respects, as it is about actually liking him as a person; I don't think it contradicts any suspicions of conflict between them
