OK, I picked everything off ITW. What now?
Honestly, I find your critique of the song much lazier than the song itself.

I'm not into writing 50 lengthy posts and wording them differently to say the same thing. Sorry.
I don't like it. Arguing about wont make me like it. Best ignore my input about t and let it go.

Thinking about what makes those songs different in my mind, all I can come up with is that TMW feels more like a true band performance instead of an Ed solo performance that the band is merely adding some color to.
Exactly.

Swallowed Whole would sound more at home on REM's Reckoning than on Eddie Vedder's Into The Wild.

I remember reading somewhere that they recorded an early take of TMW during the Riot Act sessions shortly after Ed brought it to the band, and they said "ok, we know it, let's record it". Adam Kaspar then said "no need, I got it" and they used that version on the album - the complete antithesis to BoB. I
really hope they record another album this way someday...
Edit: Here's the quote:
Jeff Ament wrote:We were out in the room playing the song and learning it. In the process, [producer Adam Kasper] went and re-miked everything very covertly. So all of the sudden when we were ready to play it, it was up and he captured it. Nailed it. That to me was really critical and kind of how the record sounds. A lot of times, there's that cool thing when you don't quite know the song and everybody is really concentrating. It lasts for four or five takes and then it's gone. After that, it's all cerebral

If only it had that kind of characterful, imperfect production

And binaural recording.

I thought I read that about the whole album? But is was ed that said nah we got it after the band thought they'd only recorded a first run through. Or was that just about his vocals?......idk I probably read it here at some point.

Im pretty sure i had read something about ed doing one vocal take and saying "that's it, i sang it so its done" or something like that. I think its a bit exaggerated, but Im sure he put less time into the vocal recording then the rest of the band put into their parts

I think I read that too, but these are the quotes I was talking about:

Stone Gossard wrote:That's a real live performance with lots of room ambience. It's us trying to keep up with the chord changes! There are some nice drums and bass. The sentiment of the song is amazing.

Sounds like a Dylan recording. You'll be lucky to get a second crack at any track, let alone an overdub.

The song to me sounds like Eddie and R.E.M took a trip into the wild, it's really growing into one of my favorite tracks on the new record.

Anyone have any ideas on what this song is about. I've got a vague sense. Maybe new ideas will sell me on the song. Right now it is probably my 2nd or least favorite song on the album.
