My thoughts:

Keep Your Eyes Peeled - The view from Hell is blue sky
So beautifully menacing. A terrific opener. How about that perfect bedrock from Joey (RIP) and Mikey? My three highlights are 2:37, the big return from the middle eight at 2:49 and the string epilogue.

I Sat By The Ocean - Do you know who you really are, are you sure it's really you?
I'd call this my summer jam but it's winter here so whatevs. The couple of live versions the preceded the leak really grabbed my attention and things haven't changed, only improved. What can I say, I'm a sucker for handclaps. Joey (RIP) provides my favourite aspect of the tune with that fill from 2:07-10. Josh's vocals are pitch perfect and the lyrics are wonderful. This would have been my choice as first single, in the event that singles still matter, which they I guess they don't? Doesn't matter, I'm still dancing.

The Vampyre Of Time And Memory - Does anyone ever get this right?
I love the predominantly bass, piano and drum arrangement here. Josh's vocals are somewhere beyond perfect, exceedingly so when placed against the epic outro. Dave nails this take.

If I Had A Tail - Expensive holes to bury things
The best song that Jesse Hughes never wrote. Those verses are fine but, oh man, those choruses are fucking great. The creepy outro is excellent. I see this being in live sets for an extended period.

My God Is The Sun - Far beyond the desert road
Another typically awesome Queens single. It is probably, however, my least favourite song on the album. We'll see how that develops over time.

Kalopsia - I'll see you real soon
As a Queens fan this song is really exciting, in that they're obviously experimenting with their sound but to me it sounds completely like them. Almost like a brand new colour in the Queens palette. Sure, it rests heavily on the old quiet/loud/quiet/loud device, but the dreamy verses and abrasive choruses go together like ham and cheese. And Trent holds his end up just fine.

Fairweather Friends - One day when we're far away from everything that hurts
The midget Ahhhhhs! at the beginning bring a huge smile to my face. More happens in the first two minutes of this song than on some entire records by other rock bands (the song is basically already into what sounds to me like a gargantuan outro by 1:10). The leads generally are incredible, particularly from 2:35 onwards. Dave's drums are faultless. Elton's backing vocals are an interesting counterpoint to Josh's lead vocals and I enjoy his contribution on the piano throughout.

Smooth Sailing - Oh, visions of collisions, fucking bon voyage
The Queens, the Vultures and the Eagles of Death Metal fucked and had a baby. I feel like Mikey might've stolen JPJ's slide bass for this take? An overwhelming post-coitus smell drips from this instant Queens classic, which features one of Josh's best and most epic solos in recent memory.

I Appear Missing - Dancing on wire, both ends are on fire, CUT ME LOOSE
The undisputed centrepiece of the album. Perfectly weighted, emotionally devastating and immaculately executed.

Like Clockwork - The deeper in the water, the more I long for you
I find myself totally enraptured with this newly emerging vulnerability in Josh's writing, arrangements and vocals. A haunting first two minutes then turns into a (dare i say it) Beatles-esque arrangement, featuring a lead break full to the brim of George Harrison vibes/tones and the first of two really lovely crescendos. A brilliant drum take from Jon is most welcome. Could be their best closer yet? So many feels.

I think that …Like Clockwork is this band's most cohesive and perfectly sequenced album. The melancholia and vulnerability that we first saw lyrically two albums ago from Josh is now beginning to pervade the arrangements and the vocal performances, which adds wonderfully to the band's spectrum. …Like Clockwork is a truly worthy addition to the band's body of work and whose lustre will not dull over time.

QOTSA doco (rough with bad audio). I miss Alfredo Hernandez.

I'm totally thrown by this record. Completely unexpected from Team Grohl/Homme. There's nothing blazingly fast or hard. Its all sinister, sexy groove. Smooth Sailing is unreal. Its nice to hear them expand their sound and give the middle finger to expectation, create a nice slice of actual art. I don't think I've ever heard Grohl so restrained in his playing. He's serving the songs well, and his drum sound is fairly solid. Josh Homme continues to be the one guy in rock who's dialed in an amazing signature sound. Whether its past drum tracks or with his arsenal of weird guitars and amps, he sounds like no one else out there. This totally holds place until Them Crooked Vultures II.

Solid review, Will. To the point.

it doesnt feel like a tired weak shit at all...in fact, there are so many different and new thing here..i guess its a shame that you dont seem to like it, but to call this record "bland"?
