I'm trying to find the name of a book I read back in school around 1991. I'd love to be able to get it again, because it was probably the first novel I read, that sucked me into reading real novels.

If anyone recognises this story and can tell me the name, I'd be eternally grateful, because I'd love to track down a copy.

These are the main points I can remember. Keep in mind, these are memories of the story from over 20 years ago.

• The main character was in a plane crash and was lost on his own in the wilderness (mountains/snow?).
• He lives in a cave to survive (barely).
• He befriends a small wild dog or wolf that ends up getting it's legs shot out by hunters.
• He returns to his original plane crash, or possibly another plane crash, and the plane was carrying radioactive material. He ends up getting radiation poisoning.
• There is possibly a Russian element to the story. Either the main character was Russian, or it may have been set in Russia. I think the title may have been a Russian name.

I apologise for the vagueness of my shitty info, but if anyone recognises this story, please let me know.

That kind of sounds like the novel "Hatchet" by Gary Paulsen, which I read in school. But I don't think there's anything in there about radioactive material.

You gotta admit, though, from the Wikipedia plot summary, that they sound quite similar.

Yeah, that's why I got excited. But this one wasn't about a kid, the main character's an adult (and grows a hefty beard to keep warm).

I remember a few of the first books that got me into books; one of them was called Dear Mr. Henshaw, and I'm sure it would feel ridiculous to me if I read it today. Another, I can't remember its name or much of its plot, but at the end a semi-homeless man that the narrator befriends ends up dying from exposure.

Thanks, man. I'd love to read it again, but I'd also love for my kids to read it too (when they're old enough).

Has anyone seen this? The Modern Library's 100 Best Novels. It also includes the reader's list.

I'm guessing since it's "modern" it's everything after 1900. I'm sort of perturbed with the reader's list. This Rand cult needs to go.
