What did you think? I kind of want to see it too.
I heard about this movie late last summer, which was right after I watched The Shining for the first time; I hadn't thought about it in ages, but when I saw you guys mention it here, I downloaded it and watched it today. I thought it was really good overall, it had me going, "Huh...wow," many times throughout, and also, "Yeah....right!" It presents a bunch of different readings of the film, and chances are you'll buy into some of them and totally disagree with others, so it's fun to fight with the TV in that respect. Out of all of them, the reading of the film as being about past-ness and the sections that thought about the layout of the hotel were the most engaging for me. The moon landing stuff was the weirdest, for sure, but when you hear some of the coincidences, it does bend your mind a bit.

I think the film suffers from the way it's marketed as revealing all of the hidden stuff Kubrick snuck into the film. Within the first five minutes I felt myself muttering, "Intentional fallacy...intentional fallacy." However, this faded away after a while and I was able to appreciate (most of) the perspectives on the film as well supported readings of the film as a complex and multi-layered text. Then, right at the end, someone mentions, "Oh, you know, authorial intent so we can't be sure." Well, duh (that kind of brought me back to the same stance I had at the beginning of the film); it's only one of the critics who says this, of course, and it's one of the more level-headed ones (if I was recognizing the voice correctly), so I'm sure many of the others don't share that view.

I'd say 8/10.
I didn't really enjoy this movie. I really wanted to, but even just from a shear "film buff" level, I just couldn't stop shaking my head at all the ridiculousness that people were reading into the film. I really didn't like the way they used other film clips (like Tom Cruise in EWS) while people were talking. I can understand that they didn't want an hour and half of talking heads, but I thought it was poorly done. I did enjoy the music.
Again, I just could never shake the feeling that these were all crazy people reading far too much into this movie and that kinda turned the movie into a chore.
Yeah, I don't really understand all the praise this movie is getting. The only thing I found kind of interesting was the stuff about the layout of the hotel. The rest was only slightly interesting in a psychological, "look at all the different ways people read into the film" kind of way.
I have a feeling I'll have flashbacks of my Kubrick Auteur class back in college if I watch this. That was a fun, but mind-numbing experience.

Recently watched Savages and Assassination of Jesse James. Both were good.

Savages started out great, but kinda tapered off towards the end. Still though, it kept me entertained. I always like the way Oliver Stone uses the camera, so the cinematography was really good (to me at least), and he always seems to use pretty cool music, so I like the soundtrack too. The overall flick was pretty good, but like I mentioned, I started losing interest towards the end, so I'd say it's like a 3 star out of 5 movie.

Jesse James was great. I loved pretty much everything about it. The development of the plot was slow, but I'm a fan of slow-burners. The acting, story, and cinematography were all well done. Some reviewers have called this movie boring, but I was never once bored watching it. 4 / 5.

American Splendor...I've seen this movie so many times, and I never grow tired of it. Paul Giamatti is definitely one of my favorite actors.

i saw skyfall the other day and what a piece of shit that was. the suspension of logic here is too much. there are a ton of plot holes but the one i really didn't get was how javier wanted to kill m himself and make it personal yet he fucking uses a military helicopter to shoot a zillion holes in skyfall, which was the most rediculous place to make a stand you just had to face palm your entire body. anyway did he think that old bag of bones m had a great chance against a helicopter at close range? does that make sense? he could have killed every fucking cockroach with the amount of ammo he pumped through the walls yet he wants to kill her himself??? what a joke the entire 2+ hours. it was less believable than 'loaded weapon' starring emilio estevez and danny glover.

I had a blast. Great action sequences. Love DC's take on the character. Great performances. Fun one-liners. Just gorgeous cinematography. Suspension of disbelief is easy with Bond. I expect a nice level of absurdity. That's part of what makes Bond films enjoyable for me.

when i came into this thread i only had an issue with skyfall. i am now adding your incorrect critique. his one liners were flat. maybe in a theater people would chuckle but not in my domicile. his take on the character? please don't even. his acting can't gel with the deeper interpersonal issues they were going for. when he squeezed his lips tighter did you really feel his backstory? dc can do action but don't ask me to believe anything past that.

Do you like Bond in general? Do you have a favorite in the series?

I though Skyfall was good, but not great. I grew tired of that final action sequence and was a little disappointed by Bardem's performance. I really enjoyed that some of the Bond back story was revealed and the opening musical sequence was stellar. I enjoy DC's stoic Bond portrayal, but I agree with nah, in that I think it limits the character.
