McP for President!McParadigm wrote:The idea that it sounds vaguely Beatlesque (or, as masta so succinctly put it, a romanticized version thereof) is pretty accurate. Not in terms of anything in particular the song is doing, mind you...very little of the instrumentation or melodic quality is directly connectable to Beatles efforts....but the low-fi result of the shitty production actually seems to help it have the "feel" of a White Album outtake. I'd draw a line from Beatles to Parachutes long before I would draw it towards 90% of Oasis's work (a comparison I never really got).

Personally, I never understood why folks think "Off He Goes" sounds like Neil Young.
I also think that about ATY. Smile is the no code song that makes me think of Neil Young

What so reminds me of the 60s pop of the Beatles (and to a lesser extent, the Kinks) is the straightness of the rhythm. There are absolutely no pushes or accents on the drums, or the finger-picking, or anything. It's 1234, 1234, 1234, 1234, and that's what, for me, gives it that slightly boring and bland Beatles quality. But hey, what I call boring and bland, others might call pure and simple. Compare that boom, cha, boom, cha simplicity with something like Jimi Hendrix and hopefully I'm getting closer to explaining why this sound doesn't interest me as much as something more angular and complex. It's also why I can't stand Jack Johnson. I guess I like my music like I like my women: with surprising angles, meat on the bone.

I think ATY is slightly Beatles-esque, but mostly for that sound near the end that I'm still convinced is a trombone. The use of brass in pop rock music is very Beatles. It ceases to be Beatles-esque when Matt opens the hi-hat and it gets a little heavy for the 'There's still time...' section.stip wrote:track11 wrote:Isn't "All Those Yesterdays" another one that people frequently describe as "sounding like the Beatles"?
