I am really happy to hear that, Spenno. I completely agree with you about the musicianship of the band; in some of those songs they are deep into some serious theory. D. DeLeo's solo on "Lady Picture Show" is one of my favorite 15-second chunks of recorded music ever.
I think you will like "No. 4" -- it's fucking heavy, and has a few instances of Matt Cameron-esque time signature play which to my knowledge doesn't appear on any of their other albums.

Whenever I'm asked what some of my favorite solos are I name Lady Picture Show and I usually get funny looks. For my money Dean had the most interesting solos of that era. I've never met a guitar player who didn't complain that his solos are a bitch to learn. They're weird.

Not sure I would go so far as to say it's all his "fault" (seems like a heartless way to describe addiction stemming from sexual abuse), but, like Spenno said, the members of STP weren't his counselors and didn't owe him anything. We don't know how close any of those guys were, and we don't know how much help they did or didn't try to give him. Addicts can be completely unreasonable and impossible to help if they're unwilling. I doubt their continuing to play with him was done out of cold-hearted malice as much as wanting to play music and support themselves.

As a husband and father myself, I sympathize with the hurt he inflicted upon his loved ones through his addiction. But in the end, my relationship with his music exists independently of that -- I have never found a lot of satisfaction in requiring a musician to live up to my own personal standards before I will deign to listen to his or her work. I am sure that the members of STP's role in Scott's life was a tug of war between their desire to help him personally and their desire to see an artistic enterprise that meant something to all of them work out. Beyond that I don't really know what role I have to play in judging the man for his actions, or the band for theirs.

I'm sure his abuse, addiction, and allegedly difficult nature as a person were all part of one vicious cycle.

Its certainly one of many great ones by him. I think his work in Ride the Cliche might be my favorite though.

Man, trippin is such a gem. I didnt quite liked it back in the 90s, but its such a different rocker. The studio version is awesome.
