If you weren't such a huge fan of Mark Lanegan I'd slap a "Has crap taste in music" sticker on your forehead.

Awful Sound: I like the bass and the guitar, but the drums feel like they belong on a different track. It's more distracting than unsettling, if they were going for unsettling.

I'm losing interest in the bassline. I feel like this song needs to either suddenly become really beautiful or smolderingly sexy, and it's doing neither. Instead it reminds me of what a Clockwork Orange imagined the future was going to sound like.

Blues Funeral is miles beyond this, to these ears.

there's even some french in Gravedigger's song.

This album is making me want to listen to Ode to Sad Disco.

It's Never Over:

I can't decide if I think the Eurydice/Orpehus thing is cool, or pretentious, or both. Well, it's definitely pretentious. Do I think it was worth it?

I kinda like the guitar in this one.

The hey orpheus bit is gonna make it REALLY hard for me to enjoy anything else in this song.

It's too bad, the 'wait until it's over' response is actually pretty smooth. That creeps up my spine in a good way

the bridge is pretty good, too (the you will get over/when you get older part)

I've been a fan of what they've done with horns on this one until now.

Not sure I wanted the bridge bit to repeat itself, and i don't like the way they dragged it out.

I wish Wyn Butler had a deeper voice. Both he and Regina are kinda ethereal, and I think I'd like how they'd play off each other more that way.


Okay, role reversal here. I like Wyn's vocals, and dislike the music. I bet Prince could cover the hell out of this one.

Okay, I kinda dig the music here--the brighter keyboard I could do without, but I like the moaning in the background, and the nice drum/bass combo.

The moaning guitar is cool too.

Don't know how i feel about the chorus. I like when they're harmonizing on 'can we work it out' but not the other lines.

This song may have my favorite regina performance on the album.

I like the brass at the end. I don't like the 'it's just an afterlife' chant


This one is okay. Some parts I really like, but some other stuff that I could do without. I might stick this one onto a playlist and grow into it. As is, probably my second favorite on this album.

Supersymmetry:

The percussion is reminding me of Mister Mister's Broken Wings.

Reflektor is EASILY my favorite, and it's the second longest song. Maybe that bodes well for this.


Why does Reflektor have a K in it? Is that like when Billy Corgan spells stars with a Z?


I like the way this song starts to build around 3 minutes or so. I hope it's going somewhere good.

Okay, despite a very promising beginning this is easily the arcade fire album I like the least. One song I like, one song I kinda like, and that's it. I am not a fan of Wyn Butler as a singer, but these guys have really strong songwriting instincts and when they don't belabor anything and just plow forward their stuff is very good. This seemed calculated to take everything I don't like about them and turn it up to 11.




Still, I'm glad the rest of you are enjoying this

they don't sound the same, but I could see billy corgan writing some of these songs, and some of the vocal performances remind me a bit of Corgan's style. Early/mid 90s Corgan, mind you.
