I didn't expect it to chart so high on UK iTunes, in fact, apart from France and Japan, it seems to have topped the chart or come in second in most countries. I'm assuming this will be short lived but still nice to see.

It'll actually look pretty bad if they don't reach #1 in America. The big records from the last few weeks are not popping big enough to really be much of a threat, and none of what's coming out alongside them is riding the same combination of singles success and media attention.
It'd be possible for Miley to surprise with a less-than-expected dip in sales, or for someone like Paul McCartney to have an unpredicted warhorse peak, but I'd say Sirens and the album both stand to lose more from a #2 or 3 debut than they do to gain from the #1 most are assuming LB will get.

It looks like that's about where it was expected. I look at other rock acts to compare - NIN and Kings of Leon did a little over 100K. QOTSA did like 90k, Green Day did like 140k first week last year, Arcade Fire will probably do better than all of them, but probably not by a whole lot. Rock music has a very specific ceiling, unless there is some huge crossover hit, there is virtually no chance of going 1 million. But from a mainstream perspective, I sort of like where it is right now, there's no Nickelback/Creed domination anymore thank god, I feel like the rock acts that succeeding in this environment are ones who really deserve it.

It's 2013. Only ten albums sold a million copies or more last year, and it doesn't look to be any better this year. It's not just a rock music thing (although rock has increasingly become the niche market that country music wrote itself into being in the 1980's). Album sales today are starting to look more and more like they did in the early-to-mid 1960's, and frankly, if PJ lands a 170,000 debut they'll either need Sirens to start showing substantially more fire or they'll need an equally strong showing on their third single if they want to go gold.
