16-year-old arrested after police received tip he was recruiting students for a mass shooting at a California high school

A 16-year-old boy was arrested this week after police learned he was allegedly recruiting students to carry out a mass shooting at a high school in Berkeley, California, authorities said Wednesday.

Police received a tip on May 21 of the teen’s alleged plot targeting Berkeley High School, which also included a possible bombing, and obtained a search warrant for his home, Berkeley Police said in a statement.

The search turned up parts to explosives and assault rifles as well as several knives and electronic items that could be used to create weapons, police said.

Authorities also prepared a mental health response through the city’s Mobile Crisis Team to evaluate the teen.

He turned himself in Monday, police said, and was arrested on suspicion of possessing destructive device materials and threatening to commit a crime which will result in death or great bodily injury.

The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office declined to comment because the person arrested is a juvenile.

in a letter to the school community, Berkeley Unified School District Superintendent Brent Stephens thanked those who came forward to report the alleged threat.

“Speaking up in this instance allowed for the police to intervene in advance of any harm occurring,” Stephens wrote.

He said the school had been in contact with the police department since the onset of the investigation, which is ongoing.

Idk if it was the state or the county that mandated it but we had a version of this at my school. A guy came onto campus and walked around campus during a code red taking pictures of people with an iPad. If he took a picture of you it represented him shooting you. The teacher next door to me opened his door for him and got "shot" by his iPad.

i cant remember who it was on twitter but they made a shocking point i hadnt thought of.


kids who are now doing the school shootings more than likely attended the school from the beginning and are well versed in what the drills are and how teacher/students go through the motions of what they have had drills for countless times.

Students and teachers have been saying that for awhile. Unfortunately, it's largely theater. I get it, but the ceaseless drills probably do more to raise anxiety and fear in students than anything else.

Edit before hitting submit: I'm not saying there should be zero drills or that there shouldn't be plans and procedures in place that students are familiar with, but I'm skeptical that the benefits from monthly drills outweigh the costs.

Have you seen anything that would help (other than basic commonsense gun control) ? My kid's elementary school has a process where you walk up to a camera and an administrator buzzes you into a "waiting room" which from there you walk through the admin section to enter the school. I suppose that helps deter on some level.

That's a good question. Idk. Our school has the same entry process now where you have to be buzzed in to the front office and we have a single point entry/exit which I'm ambivalent about. On the one hand, it probably makes it tougher to get into the school, on the other hand they don't let students through that single point until 7 am by which time there are at least 5-600 students congregated like sitting ducks in a narrow corridor if somebody were to do something awful. As you alluded to it seems like making it tougher to get a gun might be the best option for addressing the proximate causes, but what really needs to be addressed are the underlying social issues that are leading people to think doing something like this is their best course of action.

Hey, bunching up people outside of security is how we keep our airports safe! That'll work forever!
