Have you tried Ultimate Direction's handheld bottles? They are significantly lighter and fit more comfortably in my hand.oasisfan35 wrote:Nice job, keep it up.
With the heat finally hitting here I realized it wasn't comfortable running with my phone so I bought an entery level Garmin which has worked out pretty well but was off about 10% due to elevation during the hike.
In addition, before the picture for the hike start I got a nice sprint back to the condo... wife forgot something and as I ran I noticed water, ended up being my Platypus had let go. Ripped it out of the pack and hauled ass back to the lodge lobby with my Camelback bottle with hand grip in tow, I think that trip saved me because I stayed perfectly hydrated seeing what I was drinking. Love that fuckin' Camelback now. I also feel it may work out for the halfs I have coming up, at least to start, letting me run through the early water stations getting in to a better groove.

I haven't but the Camelbak is quite similar if that's the style you're speaking of and I didn't find it heavy though I was not exactly at race pace for most of the trek. Do you use a 10 oz Ultimate Direction?turned2black wrote:Have you tried Ultimate Direction's handheld bottles? No, I use the standard 20 oz. bottle. I love the nipple (water valve) on Ultimate's handhelds. It's made of a super soft rubber material. Also, it's the perfect shape and size to tuck into the back of my shorts when it's empty. I found I couldn't do this with the Camelbak.oasisfan35 wrote:I haven't but the Camelbak is quite similar if that's the style you're speaking of and I didn't find it heavy though I was not exactly at race pace for most of the trek. I dig the Camelbak but I'll definitely keep the UD in mind... well it's bookmarked anyway.turned2black wrote:No, I use the standard 20 oz. bottle. I'm hoping to log some miles tonight, of course that's after a landscaping project and dog walks/jogs.

10 miles in 73 minutes
3 a.m. run. Felt kinda shitty, but it actually dropped to about 70 last night with a decent breeze. My 8 or so hours of sleep for the entire week seemed to catch up with me and I died at the end. 36 out. 37 back. I fucking hate positive splits.

Re: The running/exercise streak thread
I started with 5.5 hours of sleep Sunday night and have whittled that down to 4 as of last night, been a long week with the wife away. Hoping to just pass out after the evening chores and get up for a solid run tomorrow morning before the heat sets in... and the projects continue.
t2b, how long have you been running? Should my out of the womb assumption be inaccurate.

He dominated this race (generally considered the "Superbowl of ultrarunning") and crushed a stack field that included most of the top international runners. Only the second person to finish under 15 hours. Proud of my boy.turned2black wrote:Never went back to Humprey's Peak as my buddy developed a nasty head cold that he needs to kick before Western States. He came down here and we met for beers. Kinda depressing that a few years ago we were pretty much equals and now he's the best ultrarunner in the world and I'm a useless pile of shit. But I think I'm happy for him.

In reviewing the official times for the hike last weekend they found that I did indeed have the fifth best time overall, so even though it's not a race it felt pretty good. The person that finished first was also an ultrarunner, gives my training a bit more incentive since he'll be there next year.
Edit: 80° when I left with no breeze, running by the beach was nice but the total lack of wind felt oppressive. I'll have to make it a point to get out early this week, glad the half starts at 6:30 am.

Run in 105+ degree heat. Actually felt really good until mile 11, then
. Last two miles took about 20 minutes.
Edit: I was actually 29 when I started.

. Last two miles took about 20 minutes.I didn't start running until I was 30. When we came back from Europe, I was 200 lbs. and I decided then that if I didn't do something I would end up like my dad who fought to stay under 300 lbs. most of his life. I started running and liked it right away, but it wasn't until I found ultrarunning that it became my new religion. I love the pain and suffering. I also love the ultra community, which tends to be a weird mix of doctors, lawyers, hippies and just flat-out crazy people.oasisfan35 wrote:t2b, how long have you been running? Re: The running/exercise streak thread
Good to know I'm not too far off starting at 31. The running community seems awfully inviting so that has certainly been a bonus. My wife's father also didn't start until he was in his 30s and though he wasn't a distance guy (10 miles or less) he was pretty fast so he's been another positive individual to talk shop with.
I think yesterday was the first time I went out for a run solely so I could think about nothing but the run. I know some will take the time to go over various things in their heads but I didn't want any of that; in fact when my right knee started to fatigue, undoubtedly from the hike, I didn't mind.
Having the Garmin watch I'm looking forward to getting on the trail near my house, the beach is nice and all but not running on pavement would be a nice way to break it up.

I've logged 52 miles in the last two weeks. I quit drinking alcohol over a week ago. I have lost zero of this fat. 4th of July week has to be one of the dumbest weeks to start trying to eat better. But I have no choice.

There will never be an easy time to get started just be glad you are, solid job with the miles regardless of how you logged 'em. The water weight will be the first to go and the decline in empty calorie intake will certainly help but the fat'll take some time; rest assured you'll see the fact that your body knows to burn it off in time.daft twat wrote:I've logged 52 miles in the last two weeks. 4 a.m. run. It was 80ish degrees. Legs still felt sketchy from Sunday's run. Even split. Meh finishing kick.

Re: The running/exercise streak thread
Took a break from the various projects taking place at my home that I now call the money pit and planned a four mile loop. First mile was solid, nice and comfortable pace with mile two just the same, except the tail end of that one I noticed my right leg not turning over fluidly; forced some full motions for a bit and the lower right side of my knee felt like it just took a bullet. My entire right leg felt torqued right down to the ankle and I couldn't put much pressure on it with acceleration. Foam rolled a bit as soon as I got in but I am not a happy camper right now.
