This is a good point. You're right, of course. My earlier post was referring to the idea that perhaps he was kind of a shitty dude. Of course, the allegations of underage abuse is disturbing at not at all what I think many of us expected.

This is all unfolding quickly.

Yeah, the defense is as ugly as the crime.

It’s sort of like how Louis CK’s follow up jokes compounded the already-substantial damage to my ability to enjoy his old stuff.

I didn’t mean to make any individual (besides stip, always stip) feel attacked. I was just trying to recontextualize what I felt was a collective knee jerk urge to protect a valued musical connection.

Totally fair.

Awful but very likely true. He’s not emotionally equipped for this.

He's denying the fuck out of it, using social media to build support, and talking to lawyers. Seems just as emotionally equipped as any other dude in a position of privilege in the same position.

Ugh.
I'm usually an advocate for this, but this is also the first time one of my favorite artists -- someone who I've followed for years, who has been a huge influence on me creatively and a musical touchstone for at least a quarter of my life -- has put me into a position like this. And it's fucking tough. I don't know how to feel yet.

He's not categorically denying it at all. He's just saying some of the stuff is grossly misrepresented.

Ryan Adams is a fuck up. He always has been. There are countless public accounts of his emotional stuntedness. He is insane bipolar and borderline personality disorder. No question has been awful to many women in his life. None of this is shocking. My friends girlfriend was always very upfront about it, and my buddy actually witnessed her getting the blunt of it via facetime on one occasion.

its shocking he pushed the boundaries like that with an underage girl, and also at times showed up nude without warning. That stuff is sickening.

he's had total crazy meltdowns on social media and has posted some truly awful stuff about his exes.

Most recently after some suicide threatening he went and got help and had been sober for awhile. it really felt like he maybe hit rock bottom and was turning the corner.

Sounds like its too late. I feel awful for all the women. I feel awful as a fan and I will truly miss his music.

I dont want him to off himself, but i will no be surprised if he ends up dead.

The underage girl thing just makes listening to his music impossible.

I feel the same way you do about the music but he's done such a good job of letting me down with his actions for pretty much the entire time I've been a fan (so almost 20 years?) that I will still be able to listen to the records.

TYea. Being an asshole and emotionally abusive and stunted does not warrant the taking down of someones career. Hell, ive dated women like Ryan Adams.

However, the going after an underage girl makes this impossible. Definitely wont be seeing him live ever again.

He did, though. It seems he's walking a lot of it back now. But his first reaction was a categorical denial.
Adams’ lawyer said the singer denied all of the “extremely serious and outlandish accusations” from the “disgruntled individuals.”
On Wednesday, prior to the publication of the article, Adams posted a since-deleted image of the New York Times’ logo with the caption, “Fuck you. You are kitty litter. Happy Valentine’s Day.” He also replied to one tweet before the story’s publication, “Run your smear piece. But the leagel [sic] eagles see you. Rats. I’m fucking taking you down.”
Both of those from Rolling Stone.

The magazine also acknowledges that he's walked it back since:
A rep for Adams did not immediately reply to Rolling Stone‘s request for comment, though the musician’s tone shifted from defiant to apologetic in statements throughout the day.
But he absolutely came out and denied all of it at the jump.

But again, this is moving quickly, and it's upsetting. In the end it doesn't really matter. But knowing how it all played out is important, especially given someone who as you say has a history of being manic.

Ok I guess I'll stop listening to Cold Roses. Jason Isbell has long ago replaced my Ryan Adams listening slot so that's fine.

Southestern & Something More Than Free are as good as any Ryan Adams album.
