DERRY, N.H. —A fox that attacked a father and his 10-year-old daughter in a Derry park Wednesday night tested positive for rabies.

Police said the animal bit the two before the man was able to kill it with a handgun. The girl's father, Brian DiPerri, said his daughter was playing with a group of other children when something charged from the woods and bit her on the foot.

DiPerri said that at first, everyone thought it was a cat. He said he was with a group of people handing out baseball uniforms when the fox attacked.

"A group of about eight girls headed back to where their parents were standing, screaming and yelling," he said. "We didn't realize what was going on until they got back, and there was a fox following the group of eight girls."

DiPerri said his priority was to get the fox away from his daughter and everyone else.

"We got the fox away from her. The fox headed back toward the woods," he said. "We proceeded to follow it to keep it away from the group of people, and it turned and attacked myself and one of the other coaches."

DiPerri said the fox bit him on the leg. He had a pistol on him, and he shot the animal.

"You really don't think too much. You just react," he said. "And it was to keep the fox away from the kids, because it's not common to see animals chasing children, let alone a group of people."

Derry police had the fox tested for rabies, and late Thursday, the results came back to confirm the animal had the disease.

"There's a brook that runs through here and some other things that will be attractive to wildlife, but for an animal to come out and attack a person, that's pretty unusual," Capt. Vernon Thomas said.

DiPerri said he and his daughter have already started the rabies treatment.

"It's just a relief that she didn't get badly bitten," he said. "I wasn't badly bitten. We do have rounds of shots to go through for the next four weeks, but once treated, it just goes away."

Officials said it's important to be aware of wildlife and give them their space.

If that guy didn't have a gun there would be like 20 people with rabies right now. That guy is an American hero.
