I think it is genuinely the worst thing they've ever done.
The slimy authorship doesn't help, it really diminishes the band's decision making in my eyes.
Hopefully a regrettable one-off!

A moment of alternate history, possibly with a point at the end but likely not.
Let’s say the song came together as the story goes, two people mutually finding the same big riff whilst waiting for Stevie into the night to do his guest session spot for Earthlings. Eddie Vedder and Andrew Watt are so enthralled by this developing track that Waiting for Stevie, instead of being held for Dark Matter instead gets on Earthling, couched just before Try.
Do we spent 2022-March 2024 debating why Eddie could come up with something like this for his solo album and not a Pearl Jam album? And what would that mean for our collective takes on Dark Matter if Waiting for Stevie were missing?
It’s at least an interesting thought experiment since I think thematically and sonically it would fit either album.

I don't hold the distain for WfS that Spenno does, but I also think the song feels a little bit like a fax of a fax, or a copy of a copy.
If it had been on Earthlings, I think people would have called it out as postering/pandering. So, I'm glad it's on a proper PJ release. To me, it's always felt a little bit like how I would imagine telling my kids (which I'm never having, but if I did) about how great Pizza Hut used to be.

I agree completely. PJ has always at least one or two songs that speak directly to me at the very moment.

WFS - the Pizza Hut of Pearl Jam songs.

Great, now you've ruined Pizza Hut for me

I can’t buy into a premise that expects me to believe that Pizza Hut was ever great.

1980s. Red plastic Coca-Cola cups. Playing Pac-Man and Galactica while we waiting for the pizza to cook. These were great times. This was the place to be.

You could get all that at Round Table and the pizza was good.

I just read the NY Times article about this earlier today and I'm so for it!

I think Pizza Hut is a separate food group from pizza. Yes, I have had tons and tons of better pizza, as one would define it, than Pizza Hut. Just like I have had tons and tons of burgers better than McDonald’s and tons and tons of fried chicken better than Popeye’s. But when there’s the itch, Pizza Hut was sublime, and fully wrapped in nostalgia.

Damn I’d kill for a slice of NY pizza right now. I’d permanently trade away sourdough bread for NY pizza dough and happily never look back.

Pizza Hut was the greatest as a kid when we’d go to the all you can eat buffet. I had two brothers, so eating pizza at home we were limited to how much each of us could have. Sure Pizza Hut pizza sucks in comparison but being able to eat as much pizza as i wanted for 3 nights a year is a core memory. (We went on each of our birthdays)

I still dig their cheese sticks.
Sure, their pizza is garbage, but it’s certainly not the worst out there. (Little Caesars). But when it’s all you have available as a kid, it’s something you don’t forget and you remember fondly.
