For people that watch movies every day, or multiple movies a day, what are you getting out of it?
My meticulous tracking of everything I watch introduces an element of gamification into my movie watching habit. That halps me to stay motivated to keep watching even when I'm not super into it.
My pace also slowed recently, I think maybe because I hadn't seen anything great recently. The gamification element keeps me moving through those low periods. And then I watch something that really excites me and I want to watch more to find more stuff like that and feel alive again

A high volume of cultural consumption might have something to do with FOMO

Wisdom is knowing there is no story you can hear that hasn't been told before, and surely you already know it. It's all pretty much the same thing. It's your willingness to go to a place that matters. Sometimes it might be better, more rewarding to take yourself to that place instead.

You know, like maybe there's something new that will REALLY blow your socks off this time. But in fact it's all the same shit being recycled through different lenses over and over again. Or in another way, fear of missing something everybody else has seen and will be discussing at the water cooler the next day. Like, it's your only connection to that world. And you're very lonely and empty other wise.

Oh, bummer. That's not been my experience, nor the experience of those close to me. I don't think that's it. But I appreciate the response.

It might well be true for some, though. I do see that.

I was more thinking of Argo. You seem like the person who just wants to distract yourself from mundanity.

- I watch a lot of movie to inform my own creativity I guess. To steal from them. But that's practical. It's hard for me to just enjoy shit for its own sake right now lol.

- A few years ago I decided to focus in on art that inspired me or might inspire me, and largely ignore the rest, at least temporarily. I've been kinda happy with that. I don't really feel the need to watch everything anymore.

- I think there might be something to purposefully narrowing my horizons so I can think and not become a schizoid.

Yeah, I think I also seek out great art for inspiration.

Steve Albini wrote:Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

That's kind of my point. I know the gamification isn't the point. But I know there are greatovies out there that I haven't seen yet. Movies that will make me happy and movies that will change the way I think about the world every day. But in order to find those movies, I need to watch a lot. I need to slog through some bummers. The gamification helps me slog through the bummers so I can get to the stuff that matters

I think an interesting exercise is to ask yourself if you would be enjoying some thing more or less if nobody else ever experienced the art but you

If nobody watched the NFL I don’t think I would watch it either. But I would still enjoy a great movie or song all the same

Categorically not true. It's been years since I've seen a television show that truly moved me. Happens with like every tenth movie.

I've been following a similar strategy for the past few years and it really does push me to watch new things but I think I hit a wall.
