I get a 28. I don't like the idea of cutting the number of legal immigrants, but switching to/expanding the merit-based system seems like a fine idea to me.

On July 6, the EU, which already exports as much pork to Japan as the United States does, announced political agreement on a new deal that would give European pork farmers an advantage of up to $2 per pound over U.S. exporters under certain circumstances—a move which, if unchecked, is all but certain to create a widening gap between EU exports and those from the United States.

European wine producers, who sold more than $1 billion to Japan between 2014 and 2016, would also see a 15 percent tariff on exports to Japan disappear while U.S. exporters would continue to face that duty at the border. For other products, the deal essentially mirrors the rates negotiated under the TPP, which the United States has surrendered, giving the EU a clear advantage over U.S. farmers.

The EU’s deal is all the more noteworthy because American farmers were relying on the TPP—to which the EU was not a member—to give them an advantage over European competitors. But in a further rebuke to the United States, Tokyo decided within a matter of weeks to offer the European nations virtually the same agricultural access to its market that United States trade officials had spent two excruciating years extracting through near-monthly meetings with their Japanese counterparts on the sidelines of the broader TPP negotiations; the United States is now left out.

The EU, which also recently inked a deal with Vietnam, is now moving forward with talks with Malaysia and is in the process of modernizing a pre-existing trade deal with Mexico.

It's fine, most first world countries have similar systems. Given what robotics and AI are gonna do over the next two decades, we don't need more people in this country. There are no large textile or auto parts plants that are begging for workers. The world has changed and our 'gives us your huddle masses' mantra just doesn't work anymore we have plenty of them already and they deserve our society's help first.

Thus, I disagree with Argo. If there are jobs out there that need to be filled, high skilled or low skilled, then let immigrants fill them.

President Trump brought the United States and North Korea to the precipice of war by warning that any further threats would be met with a nuclear attack. (“North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States. They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen.”) North Korea proceeded to test this warning by immediately issuing a new threat, to attack Guam. This forced the United States into the unenviable position of either instigating a massive war with horrific casualties or surrendering its credibility. The administration has wisely chosen Option B.

“Don’t read too much into it,” sources tell Politico’s Josh Dawsey. The New York Times has much more detail. Trump improvised his threat without advance consultation with his advisers, none of whom support it. The paper he was holding when he made the statement was about the opioid crisis. Trump “was in a bellicose mood” when he made the statement, due to a Washington Post report that morning about North Korea having miniaturized a nuclear warhead.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Defense Secretary James Mattis have issued more normal-sounding statements intended to supersede the president’s improvised one. (Mattis’s statement redraws the red line, threatening reprisal in return for North Korean actions, rather than threats.) The message of this cleanup is that Trump’s statements do not necessarily represent the position of the U.S. government – a reality most American political elites in both parties already recognize, but which needs to be made clear to other countries that are unaccustomed to treating their head of state like a random Twitter troll.

you really have to wonder just how much longer the people in the administration can allow this jackass to remain in power.
these displays seem to me like tremendous loss of face for the United States. Both the utter stupidity with which trump makes his statements, tweets, speeches, all of it, and the immediate aftermath of the administration constantly having to clean up the mess he leaves behind him.
This is completely baffling to me.
How does anyone, of any political affiliation look at this kind of incident and still think, yep, he's doing great!

Actually, given the threat of impeachment on any number of grounds, I'm amazed by how aggressively Trump and Associates are pursuing conflict with the Republican Party.
