I've been reading some entertaining stuff pointing out that GOP electors could just vote for Pence as president instead. Problem with it, though, is that it means jack shit if they can't get 270.

As Donald Trump’s most vocal critics within his own party increasingly call for him to relinquish the Republican presidential nomination, they are faced with the harsh reality that voting has already started in many states.

While the Nov. 8 election day is still one month away, vote-by-mail and absentee programs have already started in several states, including Florida, North Carolina and Virginia, three of the nation’s largest presidential battlegrounds.

Across the country, more than 400,000 voters have already cast ballots in 18 states, according to ElectionProject.org, a website run by University of Florida political science professor Michael McDonald that tracks early voting.

The party could convene and choose a new nominee if Mr. Trump quit, said Ben Ginsberg, a former Republican National Committee attorney. But in several of the battleground states, the deadlines have already passed for reprinting ballots.

“The deadline in virtually all the states has passed for replacing a name on the ballot,” Ginsberg said. “You’d potentially have to litigate state by state to get the name changed on the ballot, or figure out a way to write it in each different state.”

Adding to the complications are varying state laws regarding the Electoral College. Some states, for example, require electoral votes to be cast only for the candidate who gets the most support, meaning that could be Mr. Trump even if he quit the race, Mr. Ginsberg said.

Didn't a bunch of states pass faithless elector laws after '72? Besides being impossible to get to 270, many of those votes might be invalidated.
