Spoiler: show
I mean, it could be that I'm just not keying into what the writers are trying to say and I'm missing the entire point, or it could be just awful writing, but I don't think this is the story of a rightful heir to the throne beating all the pretenders and unifying humanity against some faceless evil. This isn't LOTR. It's anti-LOTR.

From page 1, we've been told the white walkers are pure evil and that they are coming to kill everyone. That there is eventually going to be some epic battle of good vs. evil. Dragons and zombies and flaming swords, oh my! But the themes of this show go entirely against that. And the "good guys" have a literal mountain of white walker insta-kill, 3 fire breathing dragons and vast armies. What do the white walkers have? zombies? Maybe some spiders in the books? This isn't adding up.

nah. There will probably be a big battle of some sort. They are good at them.

It will be fun to watch how it unfolds, though.

How come he isn't attempting to schmooze Dany? That's more his style. Or is he just biding his time?
Littlefinger have only ever loved one other person, Catelyn Stark (Tully), who he grew up with. He was obsessed with her his whole life, and hated Ned for marrying her. He always dreamt about breaking them up, and Catelyn realizing that she loved him. After Catelyn died, he saw a lot of her in Sansa. This fuels him.

Of course he also loves gaining power, so who knows what he will do.

More and more it points to Bran doing something that shifts the balance. With good intentions he does something that really fucks up the situation or we have no idea just how powerful the white walkers are. Hell maybe the Night King just kills one of Dany's dragons and he brings it back as a ice dragon monster thing. That would do the trick.

Apparently, a spoiler-filled synopsis for the next episode has leaked. So surf the internet with caution.

not sure why that was spoilered, but if you're going with the idea that the story is about subverting tropes, i bet you'll see something like "the white walkers aren't pure evil" or something close to that

I've thought about the potential of this for a while, especially after we learned that the WW are humans--which I guess we've known since the mutineers took Craster's Keep, but their origin story last season really upped the ante. I just don't know if there's enough time left; with 9 (8?) episodes left, they'd need to get sympathetic very soon. Maybe Bran communicates with them soon somehow?

He is the last Greenseer. The wise men and leaders of the children of the forest.

http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Greenseer

There are some minor book spoilers if you read the entire link, but nothing too bad.

I'll read the link but im not asking specifically about their origins either. Im looking for a simple statement on what their purpose is on the grand scheme of things in the setting of the kingdoms battling against one another and the whole of the world of men eventually battling the white walkers.

Bran travelled all the way up north to be with and then become the three eyed raven, and now that he is, or once he comes into full power, what will his purpose be. To assist men in defeating the white walkers? And if so, what does seeing into all of time do for them... To tell men this is how we did it last time? Jon's already mining obsidian to make weapons, and dany has dragons to burm them all to hell, right?

If I really had to take a guess about the 3-eyed raven with some Westeros history possibly spoiled:
Spoiler: show
it seems like the show may have adopted this as a mantle, but the person that Bran learns from is a powerful sorcerer named Brynden Rivers or as he was more popularly known, Bloodraven. He was a Targaryean bastard and served as Hand of the King at one time. He was known for being a sorcerer and it was often said that he had 1000 eyes and 1 because he only had 1 eye, but people knew that he had a way of knowing things, which ended up being because of his magic and he could warg into ravens. I think this is important as to why Bran was chosen by him to learn how to see the visions he saw. Bloodraven was a bastard from the Blackwood family, which is one of the few houses south of the North that still worship the Old Gods and have a Weirwood tree in their godswoods. This is probably why he can warg just like Bran could do. The Weirwood trees are the basis for these visions, almost like logging on to the internet. Weirwoods are much more powerful than the show has ever let on; Arya runs into a woods witch that lives on a hill with weirwood stumps that give her prophetic dreams, which she tells to people predicting the deaths of Joffrey, Robb, and Balon Greyjoy, among other events that came true. This is why when the Andals (a race of humans who came from across the narrow sea, bringing the "New Gods" with them) took over Westeros, they chopped down most of the weirwoods; to defeat the children and the first men.

Bran it seems can affect the past, which doesn't seem like something Bloodraven could do or knew better than that. My best guess is that the Children of the Forest regret creating the White Walkers and are looking for ways to correct that. Having an all-seeing human on their side gives them a way to try and reach the humans to correct their mistake. The powers of the "three eyed raven" are probably helped by the CotF as they searched for someone who could warg and see visions that was powerful enough to enact the changes they hoped to make. What the endgame of this, I have no idea if it has Bran altering the past again or warning those in power of what they need to do to stop the white walkers

Thanks, i think bran necessarily has to have some major role in the ultimate battle, im just trying to get why the time travel is part of that. Your post is a decent speculation

Their original purpose is to be the leader of the Children of the Forest. What he is doing in Winterfell or what impact Bran will have on the war, or what side (if any) he will choose, we don't know. We can guess that he is on the side of the humans, but no one can say for certain. Of course simply seeing it straight on from what has happened on the show, he has clearly fought against the Night King so far. However, some even speculate that he is the Night King.

I think the time travel aspect means that Bran just works as a book, basically

that particular speculation seems like bunk to me. Bran as the night king has no basis in the show, and is a physical world impossibly. Hes both leading the army of tge dead as some future iteration of himself and learning to defeat , ummm himself?? as thw three eyed raven? Too much storyline has occurred already, how do they introduce this major revelation without it sounding completely out of left field within the context of the series? I say they can't

yeah, he's giving history to the story. I'd agree with that
