I don't understand the ending. Did her eyes change colors when he was hugging her, or what?

Spoiler: show
The Natalie Portman at the end is either the full alien with pieces of Natalie Portman (like the husband) or original Natalie Portman who has been refracted already so much that she has enough alien DNA in her to change her. Natalie Portman and OscarvIsaac are going to mate and make alien babies.

A lot of people seem to view it as a psychological thing, but I actually read it as very sociological.

Finished the book last night and am still chewing on it. Not sure what I think yet.

The sci-fi/horror elements never really landed for me. Area X felt both over-described yet under-developed.

At times it reads like an extended, multi-layered metaphor for grief and/or depression. Like, it's purely psychological, in the Biologist's head. None of the shit is actually happening.

But from what I understand books 2 and 3 go into greater detail, which would complicate/negate that interpretation.

Book 2 is from a completely different perspective: The government entity tasked with monitoring the area.

Book 3 is from several perspectives and is the one that actually tries to explain some backstory.

A lot of people don't like 2 because they wanted a sequel to 1. There are parts with the person
Spoiler: show
/entity?
from the end of book 1 though. And book 3 is where you realize it's a Lovecraft story of unknowable alien entities.

I'm shocked they made a movie at all considering the source (a very weird book) and the studio that's been making some really dumb decisions.

A fun, light, yet ultimately forgettable book that never had me interested in a sequel becomes a dull, obvious, shopworn, and inconsequential film. There are things to like about both but neither are gripping or satisfying enough. I hope there is no film sequel.

yes, because this logic has successfully kept sequels of bad movies being made

The critics and some people liked it. But that doesn't matter. The money part is what matters.
