Counterpoint: any band who had a guy with a braided fu manchu is nu metal.

I can elaborate on differences between nu metal and post grunge and the evolutions of some bands when I’m not on lunch break, I got better shit to do with my time but I absolutely want to drop some knowledge later, since I’m an unashamed fan of (some) nu metal.
I have another nominee for worst nu metal band though: Saliva, fuck that band.

You make a strong case. I have to think about this

Just listen to their self titled debut. It's some kind of metal, but not nu.

Was Kid Rock nu-metal, or was shitty countrified rap-rock its own thing?

If "Nookie" and "Rollin" are nu-metal, then so are "Bawitdaba" and "American Badass"

Any wannabe Alice in Chains I would consider post-grunge (Godsmack). There were also a few wannabe Tool bands out there that I wouldn't consider nu-metal (early Chevelle).
Someone in your band had to have dreads to be nu-metal.

They really meet all the requirements, yet still seem to be non-nu-metal.

Aren't Kid Rock and Bizkit also "rap-rock?"

maybe too political. Nu-metal was mostly about how much your girlfriend was a bitch and your life sucked.

Nu Metal is more specific than just rap + rock/metal. RATM doesn’t sound Nu at all. It’d be like calling Pearl Jam post-grunge because they influenced Staind.
