Most of the music I listen to sounds purposefully dated, even cartoonishly so, so it doesn't bother me.

In the 80s, one could say, bands used synths and reverb to add atmosphere and take music to new places. True, they didn't mind selling some records but it was a more innocent time.

Today it seems so many are looking for that "80's sound". They may genuinely like synths and computers but they are also aware how the connection can help their bottom line(You like New Order? They are one of our influences along with Kraftwerks.")

Without specifics I am going to dispute this.

The nu metal and pop punk tournaments provided some examples of the most hideously dated in a bad way music of all time.

A lot of good points here but I think these shifts happen more frequently than every 10 Years for sure.

Nu metal most likely belongs in the story of rock/pop music's history whereas you could easily skip a band like Wilco.

Given my social circles Im often forced to listen to really bad (IMO) dance and techno music

It dates horribly but you could argue certain elements of it still remain successful owing to a nostalgia for the time it’s from & based on people’s youbger days out In clubs etc

Collectives like hed kandi speak to that and yet acts like chemical brothers and orbital definitely can be sorta pigeon holed or nailed to a period, despite developing and continuing their careers with new music, as with pj the argument being these acts arent producing music nearly as good as they used to. So they’re nailed to nostalgia cross in many ways.

Cool offshoot thread could be about music that is timeless.

There's multiple definitions and uses of the word "dated" being used everywhere in this thread.

I am not the best person to critique dance/ techno music but something like KLF's "What Time Is Love" sounds both dated and the best of what that genre has to offer.

Also, was Fred Durst the last voice of a generation for rock music?

Thinking about how I used to hate the chintzy Casio keyboard production on those middle-period Leonard Cohen albums and now I just love them

The sound changes as technology makes leaps. That timeframe of technology leaps is continually decreasing. I think the “dated” aspect feels and will continue less pronounce in the future.

It’s funny that some music can sound dated shortly after release, while other music seems timeless after decades have passed. That’s not a quality statement. Some dated music sounds better to me, than some music that sounds timeless.
