I feel like it's pretty reasonable to assume at this point that there aren't any lost treasures from the Vitalogy sessions. That album itself seemed to be a ragged assemblage of sorts, cohesive as it ended up being. With the last two albums, I think the logical explanation is that the CD single format has essentially vanished as a commercial medium, thereby eliminating what had historically been the band's most reliable distribution route for B-sides. I realize there are other ways of getting the music out there but I suspect that plays into it to a degree. I'm sure we'll see the stuff someday.

Ten, Vs, No Code, Yield, Binaural, and Riot Act all produced several b-sides. I wonder if the other sessions were less prolific or if they just held material back in case they wanted to use it again. There have been a number of songs written for one album and used later.

Keith Richards has said that successive Rolling Stones sessions post-1975 became less and less productive, as the band grew up (that's being generous) and went their separate ways. On the other hand, Springsteen has by most accounts remained highly productive (in terms of releases, the last decade is his most prolific, and engineers are still telling apocryphal tales of him showing up every single day with a new song) but seems to fall into creative stutters, where large numbers of unworthy ideas are developed and promptly deleted (and, if they're less interesting than half of Wrecking Ball, that says a lot). Meanwhile, I remember Alex Lifeson doing an interview in the mid-90's where he rolled his eyes at the idea that a band would even bother wasting time finishing a song it had deemed subpar.

Sadly, if I had to bet I would place my money on the idea that this band has just grown more selective in the earliest stages...probably narrowing down lists of riffs and starter ideas to only those they think are liable to be widely embraced, or will sit well in a setlist.

I'd disagree. I'd say each member had at least a few demos that were worked on but never brought up to scratch cos they didn't feel anything in them. I'd say that's true of all their records barring Ten.

Both of them are held in high regard to me.

Once I learned State on guitar and studied it (as someone else said), it took on a new relevance. The frantic energy and desperate pleadings of that song are just amazing. It's easy to "fall" into that song.

But the same could be said for the outro solo of Breath (well, learned most of the solo anyways).

It was the one from the first show with Dave A....Seattle 1991.

Really intense version- SOLAT used to be intense too... but Eddie pretty much phones both these songs in these days; which irritates me to no end.

The performance of SOLAT on Unplugged is what sold me on this band all those years ago. Therefore it will always have an edge over Breath for me.

Both songs, as many stated on here is what really introduced me to the concept of B-sides...along with Yellow Ledbetter which got a LOT of radio play and I needed to hunt them down.

Fortunately the Singles soundtrack was easy to come by. Unfortunately I spent WAYYY too much money on the (IDENTICAL!) import versions of singles at a local Sam Goody.

THIS. Old school SOLAT is amazing. Eddie phones it in now. Wrigley Field was silly. Also, it was the first time I heard them perform "Ode to Black"

SOLAT but by a small margin. Both are among the best recordings they've ever done in my opinion. Great combination of ten-era songs with Dave A on drums. The production sounds better than Ten as well. You can add the video version of Even Flow and Alone from the Go single and have yourself a nice little 18 minutes of PJs peak recordings.

Breath by a hair....Its a song that makes you just want to jump in the car and drive cross country....SOLAT unplugged is amazing tho...The vocal performance is epic
