Here's my take on the downtuning - get over it.
It is what it is. Ed can't reach those notes like he used to. It's ok. We have plenty of bootlegs over the past several years to hear him at his best. The Unplugged Show. The '95 shows. The late night TV appearances. He even sounded good to my ears during the 2006 AOL session for Avocado.
Really, the only downside to downtuning is counting on these last few years of boots to blow your doors off. Yes, it sounds funny, but I've been in the audience and it's not that bad live.

Josh on guitar for the Apollo and MSG shows?
There's like at least a 25% chance that Josh replacing Stone was the plan all along.

I'd say it's pretty common, especially among older singers (rock singers in particular).
Not even always older; Nirvana tuned everything down to help Kurt's voice barely months after
Nevermind came out.
Pearl Jam have been doing this regularly with newer material since 2007, it's just now they've widened the scope to lots (but not all) of the older songs too.

Thanks Spenno, that's when ('07) I thought things started to sound a tad different.

maybe if Ed uses some of his millionaire money, he can buy some young singer's soul and consume it, and he will be reinvigorated and able to sing his masterpieces once again

I wouldn't let this stress you out, mjd.
It'll be fine.

finally, a sane and reasonable solution has emerged.

Which young singer's soul should Ed consume in order to reinvigorate his ailing voice?

I noticed Jeff didn't play the upright bass on songs he normally would. It was weird seeing him play Daughter standing up. Indifference, too.

Woah, that’s very unexpected.
I wonder if they were having some tech issues with the stand up bass?
