That is a good one.PlayC3 wrote:I may get some flak for saying this, but one of Eddie's top vocal performances ever is easily The Waiting when he took the stage in Denver with Tom Petty in 2006. Chills every damn time I listen to it.
The '98 to '05ish stretch was his best era as a vocalist I think.Lament wrote:When I think about performances where Ed is really phenomenal, this always comes to mind. I think everything about his performance here is just outstanding...
I'd agree.Monkey_Driven wrote:The '98 to '05ish stretch was his best era as a vocalist I think.Lament wrote:When I think about performances where Ed is really phenomenal, this always comes to mind. I think everything about his performance here is just outstanding...

I think Ed had to adjust over time, with some hiccups circa 2000, but I honestly think he has done well with his new vocal style over the past 3 records. The man can still sing the shit outta ballads too.
Singers like John Lennon exhibit the same vocal maturation.
I feel like PJ one of the few here that appreciates his vocal evolution.
i actually prefer current Eddie vedder (at least on the albums--live may be different) to the late 90s/early 2000s eddie

It's a travesty that it has never found it's way into a set outside of a few tags back in the 90's.durdencommatyler wrote:And I just want to say how much I adore Stuff and Nonsense.
I've never even heard the original version, only the 7 Worlds Collide version. And it's so lovely, so perfect, that duet, that I just never bothered looking for the original.Lament wrote:It's a travesty that it has never found it's way into a set outside of a few tags back in the 90's.durdencommatyler wrote:And I just want to say how much I adore Stuff and Nonsense.
Agreed. My absolute favorite is Sleepless Nights with Beck. Their voices sound so good together. I'd love for them to do a striped down, duets cover album together. Preferably full of oldies.bodysnatcher wrote:I've always enjoyed the times when Ed duets with someone else. I'm talking about controlled, very heartfelt duets.... not live spazout duets during Rockin In The Free World or something.
His live duets with Glen Hansard, his duet with Cat Power, even his Croon Spoon song with Susan Sarandon. All compliment his voice very well.
The original (with Tim Finn on vocals) is SUPER theatrical and kinda suffers from production. There's an amazing version from an album called EnzSO (which was the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra doing Split Enz tunes) that has Neil Finn doing vocals. I still tend to go to the Ed version 9 times out of 10 though (and I say that as someone who had both other versions before Seven Worlds Collide came out). The Neil/EnzSo version is lush and beautiful, but Ed captures the frustration in the song much better than Neil does.durdencommatyler wrote:I've never even heard the original version, only the 7 Worlds Collide version. Okay, at 1:41, does he say "weiner on the other side?"durdencommatyler wrote:I'd agree.Monkey_Driven wrote:The '98 to '05ish stretch was his best era as a vocalist I think.Lament wrote:When I think about performances where Ed is really phenomenal, this always comes to mind. I believe it's "greener on the other side," but now I hope "weiner on the other side" is a lyric that ends up on the new album.McParadigm wrote:Okay, at 1:41, does he say "weiner on the other side?"
