It's true, I do. The only reason I mentioned caring about drums is that a lot of people address my criticisms of Matt with "Well no one cares about drums anyway", and that gets my goat, so I apologise if that's not what you were doing. I have no interest in scapegoating Matt for PJ's problems; that's not what I'm doing. But I'm not the biggest fan of Matt for things I notice about him. Yes, some PJ songs are started too fast by the guitar and Matt has to keep up, but other songs are either clicked in too fast by Matt, or become much faster after Matt joins in. So you know, it's an either / or thing. When these things happen it's everyone's "fault" for not feeling the need to be a tighter band. But that's their prerogative.... as well as to have a little fun.

Well yeah, it's pretty great. Is it a sampled loop? Possibly I can't remember. It's very well played though, and the song suits the loop.

I do remember seeing Pj in 95 with Irons on drum and having a feeling of "Well, this sounds different, its not...heavy"

Of course i was 15 and had only the albums and shitty bootlegs with Dave A on drums but i do remember feeling a tiny bit let down on the wall of sound. It was interesting. but looking back - Absolutely love his groove and his time with the band

Yeah. My general feeling is that Jack brought *texture* to the music and instrumentation which has produced some of their best music. But "loudness" wasn't what he was going for, and I think I was disappointed by that too at the time and maybe never fully recovered from the disappointment. Ideally I would love a drummer with Jack's appreciation for laid-back "folk-subtlety" combined with Dave A.'s expertise with complexity, funk and aggression. But you can't have everything... unless you're Loel Campbell.

Me neither. But I honestly feel like they might be on an upward trajectory for this album, so if album #11 or album #12 is a near-masterpiece I'd be happy enough for them to leave it there.

Um, no, not just because it's Dave. The song is a drone which rises "like a wave" but remains on the same simple chord progression throughout, so because it's a drone, the "droning" looped drums suit the intent. They're tribal drums, which are by nature repetitive and trance-like.
