I can't really recall what was so different about the 2 Hostel movies aside from characters, but I am pretty sure 2 delved into the underbelly of the killing people in Hostels operation of where people would pay money to do whatever they wanted to another human being.

I'm on board with this. I generally don't find anything that disturbing about "torture porn" because usually the violence doesn't carry any weight. To me, the knowledge of what is going through Bill's mind in Happiness or Sara Goldfarb's descent into madness in Requiem for a Dream is far more disturbing than anything I have seen in a slasher movie. Movies like Hostel and Saw are just like action movies to me, mindless and unaffecting.

I really liked that first Saw movie.

I haven't seen many on that list. But Dancer in the Dark and Happiness are two of my favorite films. And both just wrecked me. To this day, I've only seen Dancer twice. I'm basically able to watch it once a decade. That movie...

Seen:

5. Requiem for a Dream (2000) - Disturbing, but intense. Liked it. No reason to shelter people from the reality of the subject matter. "Lux Aeterna" is one of the best pieces of film score of the late 20th century.

8. Oldboy (2003) - Graphic, but not that bad in context of the story.

9. Deliverance (1972) - Great movie, not sure why this is on the list other than the one scene everyone already knows about.

11. Irreversible (2002) - Shitty, pointless exploitation. Have not idea how it ends because 'the scene' was too long for me to tolerate

13. House of Sand and Fog (2003) - This is a brilliant movie. It's upsetting, but flawlessly acted with a haunting story. Kingsley gives what is IMHO his best performance. Highly recommend this one actually.

14. I Spit on Your Grave (1978) - watched to see what the hype was about. Pointless other than to graphically depict rape for those that get off on it.

20. Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father (2008) - One of the most infuriating films I have ever seen. I wanted to go out and punch the first Canadian I saw, right in the dick.

I bought Dancer in the Dark on DVD a long time ago and have never gotten around to watching it.

I've seen:
Requiem for a Dream (not just an amazing film but one of my favourite soundtracks too)
I haven't seen Funny Games but I've seen the remake which I thought was a piece of shit.
Irreversible (His newer film Into The Void is better IMO)
The Mist (I didn't really enjoy this all that much TBH)

I really have to check more of these out.

"Funny Games" is an amazing tour-de-force in both forms (the American version is a shot-for-shot remake of the original). Michael Haneke is one of the most talented directors around right now.

why would anyone watch any of these? i couldn't even read all the goddam basic descriptions in the original post without feeling queasy. i just don't see the value in watching something that will make me physically sick.

Because some of them are good movies meant to be appreciated on a different level than the base yuk-yuks of popular cinema, that attempt to make some sort of artistic statement and are not meant to appeal to everyone. Because art can, and should, offend, disturb and disrupt. Of course not every movie has to be bleak and awful, but thank God some of them are-- and thank God we have mindless comedies, superhero flicks and conventional dramas too. And all the shades and variations therein.

The villains are awful and the victims just seem so weak to me. I mean, the guy's only got a golf club and he's meant to be defending his family here. He doesn't seem to even try. I can't tell if that's on purpose or if they just suck. It makes it hard to care about the victims when they're so bad, and I'm not sure if I'm meant to be afraid of the villains or not but I find nothing frightening about them whatsoever. A weird guy with a golf club just doesn't do it for me. The rewinding thing at the end is kinda interesting, but the whole movie kinda fails in the end for me.

I loved Cache, though.

Yeah, the guy's so completely helpless. I think they were trying to get that idea across. The patriarch was taken down with minimum effort and the family's lives are at the mercy of these two little psychopaths who are just having a laugh. I loved it.

Not on this list but I always found the scene in Unbreakable where the guy storms into that family's home distressing.

In all honesty, seeing videos of 'youths' running rampant in our cities is more disturbing to me than anything in these movies and I suspect the reason we see such extremes of violence (both physical and psychological) in more mainstream movies now is because with the proliferation of cameras, the evening news broadcast is often just as disheartening.

I have no idea how Oldboy made it on to this list, and thus I am disappointed that it may be approached with apprehension. It's just a brilliant film. Watch it.
