Re: New Song: Lightning Bolt
i like this one, but i don't like how eddy continues to try to push his voice to places it can't go anymore (as in this song, just before the outro). he does sound good prior to that though, and i'm sure he'll sound good on the studio version.

I hope they name this song (Somethingman) in parentheses. Because he won't let this one go.McParadigm wrote:Oh dear god say it isn't so.you gotta know you'll never let her go

Lmao , there's a high possibility that all of those lyrics are wrong.
Honestly it sounds kinda yieldy to me. And not just the e-bow but that helps. The guitar melodys and mike's solos.

The closest this sounds to anything on Yield would be "Leatherman" or "U."

Re: New Song: Lightning Bolt
Quite a bit of Backspacer was Yieldy, I thought. But the production ruined it. If the production is better on this one (and I have no reason to think it won't be, since Backspacer's schtick was obvious from the word go) then it's possible.stupidmop wrote:Lmao , there's a high possibility that all of those lyrics are wrong.

I'm not sure what to make of this yet.
On first impression, I don't care very much for that verse melody but I do like the "lightning booolt" chorus.

i don't hate you, but only because I'm trying very hard not to.harmless wrote:Everyone might hate me for saying this, but the earliest example we have of this kind of emotional 'bland' song is probably Better Man. But the production of that song, and the instrumentation and passion of the performance, lifts it and makes it more than it should be.

Re: New Song: Lightning Bolt
Ed yelling "LIGHTNING BOLT" over the top of a cinnamon toast crunch chorus was easily my "worst case scenario" upon learning the name of the album. It's not even fair to call it stupid...that wouldn't be going far enough.Birds in Hell wrote:I'm not sure what to make of this yet.

Hopefully, in a studio setting, the rest of the song makes it less cringe-inducing. But this sounds a little like one of those "we've been doing this for a long time and we didn't really have anything to say but we do know how to put part a into slot b," mid-to-late career dullsville moments so many bands put out.

So if you only want pearl jam to write DARKNESS AND ANGER (unless it is yield, where it is okay for some reason)
Well, this was just talking about Lightning Bolt, not Future Days. And I'm oversimplifying and being a bit hostile, but after years of this shit I'm out of patience for what read like knee jerk "it's not angry or depressed so I don't like it" reaction that infects much of the criticism here. Maybe I'm still railing against old demons, and there is the obvious caveat that this doesn't apply to everyone and it is totally possible to just not like the song on the merits.

Reminds me a little of In Hiding, nothing specific though. Idk if you were being serious but i really like leatherman, so thats not a bad thing for me.Kevin Davis wrote:The closest this sounds to anything on Yield would be "Leatherman" or "U."

I think we're the only two who prefer the chorus to the verses.

Re: new song: lightning
It's not like I need darkness in a song, but I do need some element of depth, and if a song doesn't offset its happiness with a little darkness, it'll be fine but it'll lack any multi-facetedness. That's why The Fixer works better than Supersonic. Cheesy is all Supersonic is, but The Fixer at least tries for more.stip wrote:Kevin Davis wrote:C'mon, man. Re: New Song: Lightning Bolt
I feel more "uplifted" by Mind Your Manners than I do by any song on Backspacer.

Probably because MYM is better, but I don't think it's more "uplifting" by design.

I'm not sure good rock music exists that's uplifting by design.

My Guess:stupidmop wrote:she come on like a stone

like a burning meteor

Shes looking for a place to land
She said you got yourselves some sand
And whatever you (?) she took as (?)
Now she comes (?)
With her new replanted seeds
soon you're thrown down on your knees
And then you're dead
And then before you know
the weeds are (obesly?) overgrown
With the all the wild seeds she sows
in your sleep
you gotta know you'll never let her go
Shes a lightning bolt
lightning boltx2
Always something and never nothing
isn't that the way we're taught to dream, to dream
looking through the worn out pages
stages when you knew not who to be
until the lightning strike sets you free
you gotta know you'll never let her go
Shes a lightning bolt
lightning boltx2
crashing so many waves (really ed, again?)
??? shoreline every day
????? choose to sing (i got nothing for this verse basically)
And then before you know
the weeds are (obesly?) overgrown
With the all the wild seeds she sows
in your sleep

blargh blargh with you hey hey yeah hey yeah
(i think this is an actual verse as opposed to random adlibs but i got nothing)
Shes a lightning bolt

Shes a lightning bolt

JAAAMMMM
These are probably mostly wrong
Like force of nature with slightly less cheese maybe.
Crashing stormy waves
Erode her shoreline every day
Until the castle of her……turns to sand
There's the dog. You can't fake that stuff. Confess with your mouth.
