The song has no dynamics or musical changes, and Eddie sounds like he was huffing dust beforehand. Also, I mentioned this elsewhere, but I don't even think Matt is drumming on this.
It's got a good dark vibe, but it's not a song. I don't think anything on S/T is better than this, and that album is pretty not-so-good.
Boy. To each there own and all that but this song is top tier. It's rich, natural, honest and enticing. It's not trying to over do itself and that's what I love about it.
Yeah, I don't want to take anything away from people liking it, but I can't name another PJ song that doesn't have a chorus or bridge or another part that gives the song movement. This just feels like a compelling sketch, to me. And I really do think the singing is substandard.
It has an unfinished feel for sure. It's anti-modern Pearl Jam. It's intimacy calls for me to want to come closer and listen. I want to close my eyes and get lost in it.

the drums are interesting too. there's kinda alot goin on for a slow song, almost jazzy.
whatever they start doing at the end should have gone on for another 30-60 seconds.
is it overstating that this might be the best song they've written since binaural? its really, really good.

The biggest criticism I have is that it hangs on the same four (or three?) chords for way too long at the beginning. It's got the half-and-half structure of Fatal but isn't quite as interesting.

im not even sure if thats a criticism or just a preference in song writing. some songs only have 3 or 4 chords, but are still awesome. i think what really makes the song is ed's voice. he sounds great in whatever the hell voice he's singing in. i also really like the drums.
what do u think of the drums? i know ur a drummer

Yeah, it definitely screams "demo idea" to me, rather than "finished song." But I totally understand digging the vibe. It's not cheerleader rock.
I wanna talk drums, too! I swear it's not Matt playing.

I love it more
because it has no real structure or chorus, its like ed is telling a story that happens to be set to some awesome music. I love the rawness, sketchyness and its 2am in a smokey half empty bar, pull up a chair, let me tell you a story-ness. Both this and let it ride seem like more of eds 'fables' like gtf.
Why does a song need a verse/chorus/bridge structure to be a finished or a real song anyway?
Knowing my luck a polished new version will probably show up tomorrow complete with choruses and a bridge thus proving the band was with you all along

there's no chorus in 'unthought known'. it could use one, but its not like they havent written songs like this before.

It sounds nothing like him. The snare hits sound kind of timid, and the cymbal crashes aren't so much his style. No fills, either. I wonder if he was out sick that day, and Stone took over.
On the structure tip: it's not that it doesn't have a chorus, it's that it has no parts other than the repeating verses. Which in and of itself isn't bad -- it's just not how they have ever really written.

I'm loving this song...It would have made a marked improvement to either of the last 2 albums if it was included.
Ed's voice is just amazing...great style and tone on this one
Matt's drumming...creative fills, has a groove...this sounds like Soundgarden Matt.
Boom!! love that little outro. I want more of THIS GUY.

Is it possible this was a stone demo that Eddie dropped vocals on? That was my impression upon first listen. The arrangement is very Stoney to me and as someone mentioned, I'm pretty sure that ain't Matt on the drums

I dunno, maybe it was the 50-plus pages of posts about how great these songs were that got my hopes up. I think I'd skip this as much as any other song on Avocado and put on any of their other albums.

Sounds like a Stone song, but about Matt...im not sure. Eddie´s vocals seem very recent.
