I don't know what it is about key changes, but they're so corny to me. I think I notice it more when a song is already upbeat. It's like the song is trying to double down on the natural positivity in a way that feels forced. You already had me at the hook, yanno?

There I go talking about music theory already.
OK sorry for overreacting, I'm a bit stressed today
No biggie. I didn't mean to disrespect you or your takes. I react more often than I stop to take a beat, clearly.

Wow, okay. I was trying to inject a little discussion about the various types of discussion we'll all have in this thread, but whatever.

Do you wanna talk about it?
My girlfriend is meeting my family for the first time

There's gotta be a song on this list describing that kind of occasion, right?

A key change can be really effective. The first one that comes to mind for me is at the end of that Whitney Houston's I Will always love you song.. cause her voice is so majestic there it works so well I think... It just.. gets you, catches you off guard.

Lots of great music in every genre, and even music we now consider "respectable" used to be derided as low-brow at some point
it’s true

I think the only song I've ever heard where a key change makes the song complete is T-Swift's "Love Story." It all builds up to that wedding proposal. A triumphant, elevating moment that the song has worked hard to create room for.

This is a good video on key changes and the role they play in building emotional narratives
