Why won't Argo release his PMs? What's he hiding?
Ressentiment is a somewhat amorphous term with different interpretations of what it really means, but my understanding is this:washing machine wrote:Burt, can you walk us through the concept of ressintement?
Extremely. It asserts dominance.Dev wrote:Is it alpha to workout in jeans?
It's probably one of the harder ones. It's the closest he ever comes to a systematic, academic work.washing machine wrote:Thanks. I'm digging in to Genealogy of Morality, but Nietzsche is dense writing.

Interesting, thank you.BurtReynolds wrote:It's probably one of the harder ones. It's the closest he ever comes to a systematic, academic work.washing machine wrote:Thanks. I'm digging in to Genealogy of Morality, but Nietzsche is dense writing.

Something like Beyond Good and Evil or Human All Too Human are easier I think. Mostly just little aphorisms around general themes.
TLDR: Ressentiment is resentment turned inward on the self, and the consequences of that.

Whereas resentment is a feeling of hatred for the powerful, ressentiment is a term describing the broader process that derives from that initial resentment, on both a personal and social level.
In short: When there is a competition over some good, the loser (the weak) becomes envious of the winner (the strong). This painful feeling of envy can not be overcome by taking the good for himself or enacting revenge on the winner. So he has to develop a new way to discharge his frustration.
Through a certain process, this feeling of resentment is turned away from its original cause (the strong) and turns inward on the weak himself, giving rise to feelings of self hatred, which in turn gives rise to an all new society.
Through the same process, the loser develops a new worldview in which he convinces himself (and hopefully the winner as well) that the good was not valuable at all, and in fact, not having the good is the real "moral" value.
On a social level, this gives rise to an entirely new value system (slave morality), where previous values are inverted. The old, "natural" good/bad value system is exchanged for a new, reactive value system based on good and evil. Older, life affirming values like strength, pride or self assertion are reimagined as sin, and they are exchanged for values like humility, poverty or obedience. This is the root of the Abrahamic religions and the modern day values we take as a given.
