They announced a new drummer today, released a video of his final audition, have an instrumental album Ted Tapes 2024 out tomorrow, and promise more announcements tomorrow as well. Not bad.

Yeah, it’s fascinating because they’ve been through a lot of personnel changes in the last year. The album was done before that but curious how that will translate live.

Looked to queue this up this morning…a double album?! This is a commitment.

This is really the inverse of what normally happens where the fans hear the album and wait to see how it translates live. Instead, I am wondering how these songs will translate in the studio since I have heard live versions of nearly all of this. Should be fascinating.

I listened to the first 12/14 songs on the commute. Enjoying it quite a bit, but I think the haters gonna hate even more. The best description I can give this as a whole is that it’s like a yacht rock album if it were created by a jam band. It probably doesn’t help that Rick Mitarotonda’s voice is smooth as softened butter.

Animal is easily the most fun and wildest track on this album so far, and I don’t think either of the last 2 songs are really going to scrape at that.

Triple, actually!

Same here, having heard all but two tracks on live recordings. Finishing up side four now. Sounds great. Just think...shorter songs, with the addition of horns.

Silver Rising is good, no doubt, but the studio version of Animal is really fun.

I would say I enjoyed all of it, with a meh response to Atlas Dogs and How It Ends. The rest is really enjoyable.

...and they dropped a new album at midnight! Immediately available to stream, and out on vinyl/CD in mid-November.

Much like the last one, it's comprised mostly of stuff they've been playing live for some time now, with a couple of new tracks mixed in. Most of the way through it, and it sounds great. Looking forward to the vinyl release - 3 LPs, ~1.5hrs of music.

That was a surprise. Haven’t heard it yet though.

Ha! Essential albums thread is my baby right now, but I will give this a listen over the next couple of days. I have a 90 minute drive tomorrow morning so this is nearly perfectly timed.

Also, between this and Everything Must Go, they have more than doubled their previous studio output over 10 years in about 4 months. That’s crazy. 2 hours and 57 mins of new studio output - so more than Pearl Jam’s last 15 years. Not that quantity equals quality, but that’s still impressive.

Heard Chain Yer Dragon this morning. Very much on par quality wise with Everything Must Go, and also, as noted, mostly studio versions of songs they’ve been playing live for years. Royal, Empress of Organos, and Factory Fiction all really impressed me on first listen.

It cracks me up that so many jam band folks are so wildly irritated by this band. They are just doing what they do, which is trying meld the universes of indie, yacht and jam rock into one package. They are frankly pretty good at it.
