I think Arcade Fire should make it, and Kings of Leon might if they stay interesting for long enough. Incubus totally blew their chance with the last album.

I think a band being missed as peers is Blink-182. They've been around for 20+ years, 8 albums, still tour, stable band line up and everyone has side projects.

I think of the newer bands that Arcade Fire is most like PJ.

The Killers are more likely to be in it than any band on this list with the exception of Coldplay.

Actually, The Killers are the post-Pearl Jam band who's career trajectory most seems to resemble Pearl Jam's. A moment of zeitgeist debut album that crossed over and yielded several hits that remain in regular rotation almost a decade later. Subsequent albums that have shown creative growth at the expense of their commercial appeal, yet strengthened the resolve of the die-hard segment of their fanbase. If you asked 100 random music fans on the street what each band's best album was, 85 would say the first one. If you asked 100 die hard fans of each band what their best album was, probably 15 would say the first one. Big enough to draw huge crowds in every city, and always at the top of festival bills, yet out of the public consciousness enough that when they come to town it's not a "big deal." Both bands had undeniable influence on alternative music, but both were "uncool" enough that you didn't hear a lot of musicians siting them (the way they do with Nirvana or Alice In Chains or the Strokes or Interpol). The Killers right now strike me as being in a similar place to Pearl Jam circa-1998 or so.

I dunno. Shooting from the hip here, but it makes sense in my mind.
