There’s something strangely bitter/resentful/self-pitying ( I mean that in the most nonjudgmental sense possible) about the “something I never had was the upper hand” line

I agree; at first I was like "dude you're up to your eyeballs in privilege", but then I thought well, if he's talking about a specific painful situation, it might be sincere

Yeah I definitely think it’s about the upper hand within a relationship or interpersonal situation.
But I guess it’s one of those lines on this album that comes off like we are getting a glimpse into a raw emotional mind that is honestly speaking feelings no matter how they come off.

I love the start, so Floyd mixed with a little U2 too

Ed's phrasing in this chorus is phenomenal.

the lines once divided, are blurring now.....
Im into the outro now. Learning the chorus and how it gently flows from that bluesier verse into the chorus is real nice....
This song could go on for another 5 minutes and id be okay. Absolutely epic.
Ed sounds beautiful.

And the intro from Where the Streets Have No Name?

that first verse smacked me in the chops at the theatre "though the book / it may never be read by anyone / by anyone but me"
ouch

"Maybe just the two of you" gets my vote for most likely lyric to get changed at the live shows to refer to the crowd.

This song is absolutely gorgeous… Ed’s delivery is stellar…just next level.
I think part of that is because they’ve never written a song quite like this. The whole band is on point.

Indeed, the two of you has to be a reference to daughters, right? If so makes it personal. Hmmm….definitely staring down the potential ending of something.

I had the same thought on this last listen.

I have a strong feeling that a year from now this will end up being my top song on the album...a few others are still probably above it now but this one has room to grow.

It just sounds so huge in my headphones. It just takes over everything. This is unbelievable.

Too many of the lyrics on this album are making me overly emotional. Fuck you, Ed.
