I’m warming up to this one, though I still think it’s pretty flawed. But it would be a much stronger opening than the first two songs, which are such a chore to get through
I forgot about Blackbird momentarily, but still, that's a wonderful 1-2-3 punch for me, and it doesn't let up with "Protector"

as for 16 Carriages, I have no issue with the simple two-chord structure and the lyrics taking centre stage, especially as long as we're talking about folk songs

Legit cannot imagine hearing 16 Carriages and not being moved by it. It's the strangest music take I think I've to ever heard.

Listened to "Ameriican Reqieum" and it reminds me of Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth"

Wiki shows Stephen Sills with a credit.

I've actually got no problem with the structure, it's that there's no drama to it. Those drums should explode out of the speakers, but the whole thing feels energetically limp.
I find the thigh-smacking / boot-stomping / finger-snapping to be more important than the drums, aesthetically, but I know what you mean; it's still mixed like a pop song, the drums never fight to be heard over the voice

And yet you've got half a dozen people here agreeing. So you're not that freaky, spaceman.
