Bob Weston, Shellac's bassist, also plays a Travis Bean. I had never heard of them before. The headstocks remind me of vintage Kramers or Electrical Guitar Company's aluminium stuff. Pretty damn cool.
There’s a guy in FL who makes these guitars now, all modeled on Travis Bean. The owner Kevin, and really the whole staff, are huge Albini nerds:

Edit: sorry, I see you were already familiar with them. Yeah, part of their deal was that the Travis Beans had become expensive collectors items so they wanted to start a new manufacturing line of a similar product.
ooooh baby. Some beautiful guitars there.

tragabigzanda wrote:Gorgeous, but an acquired taste. The guitars have poor sustain and the necks are always cold when you first pick them up.
Sounds like a guitar you gotta work at to get it to play nice with you. I like it.

I saw Failure play their entire Fantastic Planet record and then close the show with this song in 2016. I went to Chicago for that show so maybe Steve was even there, who knows. I do find their debut to be very underrated compared to the later stuff, it's also the only album they ever made that wasn't produced by the band members themselves.

Another pair of underrated bangers from Albini are High On Fire's Blessed Black Wings and Neurosis' Times of Grace. Albini producing metal usually yielded some pretty amazing results.

Listening to Rid Of Me right now. First time in a long time.

Wish PJ still make this kind of violent, dark music. I listened to Is This Desire? this week and while its more soft, there is still a darkness around the music.

Anyway, cheers Steve!!

Breeders next

RIP, Steve Albini.

He once called Steely Dan “music made for the sole purpose of letting the wedding band stretch out.”

Now SD boosterism will flourish unchecked on this app. Which doesn’t feel quite right.

Everyone needs a quality nemesis. And today Dan fans lost theirs.

:haha:

LV72 would've definitely backed me up on High on Fire and Neurosis being some of the best bands he produced for.

Also gonna throw some love for The Jesus Lizard and Meantime by Helmet out there too, shit just gets me hype.

He produced the debut album of Chevelle and his final produced album (afaik) was Code Orange's The Above, so he even did some nu-metal.

As far as I know Albini produced "In the Meantime" but most of the actual production was done by Page Hamilton. Albini did the engineering/mixing along with Wharton. I'm not going to pretend like I really know the differences between engineering, producing, mixing, mastering, etc.

Damn, that's awesome jammer. I'd heard of Failure before but never heard a lick. Instantly transporting to a different time and place -- puts me right back in the early 90s. Love this record, and that track in particular is my favorite so far.
yeah i never heard either ... diggin' it ...

Last night on John Mulaney’s Netflix show Everybody’s in LA, he thanked all the guests, and then thanked Steve Albini.

Failure rules, dummies. Better late than never I guess.

Did you know that Greg? Charles Edwards from Failure convinced Tool's Justin Chancellor to pick up a Wal bass? What a great fucking call that was.
