Anything the psychologists can make $$$ testifying about, writing papers and giving interviews about, and treating is a real thing. We swearz.
But, I do think this is real and that kid's lack of consequences and wealth exacerbated his normal teenage behavior. I just don't think that is in any way, shape, or form an excuse for keeping him out of jail.

Why do we conceptualize jail as corrective punishment? It doesn't seem to work very well at that. This individual belongs in jail because he has demonstrated a substantial risk to society. Unless he receives effective psychiatric care or ages out of it, he should probably stay in jail.

It's not corrective punishment for just the offender, but demonstrative prevention for anyone else thinking of doing the same thing.

This, yo. Jail is suppose to be a deterrent as much as it is punishment. Obviously not in this case though.

The deterrent effect doesn't seem to be substantial either. Nor does it seem particularly moral.
