Don't believe it, that's not a Lovie Smith type of guy.

Like I said earlier, do we even know what kind of QBs Lovie really likes? (And no, let's not mention "Rex is our QB").

I just don't buy it, I could see them going after Bortles before Manziel. It's possible the owners want Manziel to increase interest, I just don't see that as a Lovie pick. I'd think he'd want more of a big body type that can deliver the football accurately and Bortles still has good ability to move around
I'm not sure what to make of Manziel as a pro yet. I was more sure about Russell Wilson as a pro than I am about Manziel.
That, and they are probably going to have a chance at Bridgewater, Mettenburger, Aaron Murray and AJ McCarron later on too. There are plenty of capable QB's in this draft, I'd think they would try and get Sammy Watkins or Mike Evans or some kind of rare weapon to increase offensive potency that early.

Yeah, if he wants someone close to Jay Cutler, Bortles is the clear pick. I'm just not convinced that the Bucs will go with a QB anyway. I've mocked them on defense for quite awhile. Of course, now that I've said all that just watch them actually take Manziel at #7...
Who are you hoping for at #6? Seems like an edge lineman on either offense or defense would be the best.

My mantra this week is Anyone but Lewan. I want no part of Taylor Lewan at all. If it's a tackle I'd love Matthews, but my team is beyond desperate for pass rush and free safety. So they could even trade down for Pryor.
Anyone... ANYONE but Lewan.
Pie in the sky: Clowney, Robinson, Matthews I like Mack, but I'm worried it's going to take him a little bit to adjust, and that early, people will rip him to shreds if he's not perfect immediately.
IF everyone is gone at 6 maybe Barr but they need a great defensive player more than anything else.

Yeah, I don't think Lewan will be horrible but he's striking me as a Gosder Cherilus/Bryan Bulaga type that's best for the right side. Combine that with the assault charges and that's not someone you draft at #6. Matthews/Robinson/Clowney/Barr/Martin seems like a good quintet to aim for, and it seems highly unlikely that all five would be off the board when the Falcons pick.

After debating and having several conversations with others about Manziel, I'm going to slightly retract/alter my statement from the last few pages....
Based on his speed alone, I think that he can be serviceable for a few years, and perhaps lead a team to the playoffs. But, eventually, defense will catch up to him, and I don't see him ever developing into a great pocket passer, so I'm thinking his suffers some nasty injuries along the way that will kill/hurt his NFL career.
I see a lot of 9-7, 8-8 seasons for him, coupled with some league discipline issues (fines, perhaps a small suspension).
Again, a serviceable NFL QB, but not a franchise player.

ive been in the same boat this whole time, but now i just dont know, i dont think id be THAT upset. the way i would see it if they do take Manzel is that they are trying to bring some excitement to the Offense, it might not work out but they are taking a shot. im still hoping for a trade down and grab Carr, Bridgewater or Bortles if he falls, but i will no longer be mad if the take Manzel.
i have heard though that the sudden interest in JFF could be a push from the Glaziers and not directly from Lovie or Tedford.
man i cant wait for 8pm, its gonna be a crazy first round i think

Breeland is pretty solid. I think if he's there in the 3rd or 4th, he'd be a great pick up. He's more of a physical corner, so I could see him develop into a nice pressing corner. He's a pretty good tackler too.

"In 1999, the Patriots lost linebacker Todd Collins, punter Tom Tupa, defensive tackle Mark Wheeler and offensive lineman Dave Wohlabaugh in free agency. As a result, they were awarded four compensatory picks: Nos. 127, 199, 201 and 239. Because it's a formula, you can't equate an exact one-for-one in terms of the specific lost free agent who netted the 199th pick. For example, you can't just say it was Tupa who yielded the 199th pick."

Chris Berman gets some props from me for asking the commish some tough questions, including on Michael Sam, the Redskins name, and (one that's close to Berman's heart) what the situation with the Bills will be now that Ralph Wilson is gone. Berman was the most serious I've ever seen him when he talked about that last issue.

Thanks!
I bet there's a way to figure out exactly who it was, though. It would be so awesome if it really was Tupa.
And I agree that trading Mallett would be really smart on the Patriots' part. It's more puzzling for the Texans. They'd be smart to sign a modest extension just in case he does work out.

I used to really like the idea of Tupa. A decent punter/holder who used to be a QB. My memory is fading, but I think they took advantage of it at least once.
Also, I'd like to see Mallet get a chance. I don't have any expectations, but who knows... I'd just like to see what they can develop. 12 ain't got too long to go.
