Some of the best discs to use as drivers are mid range discs, and I don't even use a putter anymore.
Those starter sets are alright in theory, but I don't think you even know what disc you're going to get in each category. And they are wildly different.
I usually recommend these three discs to start with, and they're the three I use 99% of the time.

The Viking is a good driver and in the champion style makes for a really good forehand shot. Pretty much all my forehands are thrown with this disc, easier to control than others I've tried and responds well when you try to throw it a little softer or harder than normal.

It's a mid range but the comet is great for driving in the right situations. I only throw this one backhand (traditional backyard frisbee throwing style) and when you get it right it just glides super straight for a long time. Backhand shots inherently break left (for a right handed thrower) but this one minimizes the impact if kept level with the ground.

I can throw my Archangel further than any other disc I own. I only throw it backhand (though it would be easier than the comet to throw forehand) and will actually break slightly to the right if thrown properly (opposite the way the backhand tends to break on its own), and you can always tilt it left a little bit to give it the traditional break. My only problem with this disc is knowing when not to use it, because if you're not careful you can overshoot certain shots.

I don't like the idea behind "starter discs". I'd rather get discs that I know are good to start with but ones you'll want to use even when you get good.

What do the numbers on the discs mean? The ones near the bottom in the little boxes
I think we just have dicks and play it again to try and get them, so im not sure if there are a lot of brands out there, but if the numbers help decide what you are looking for then i can pick out what i need in any brand. Also how do you know if it is for forehand or back hand? im not even positive what forehand is with a disc, so im gonna do an image search

This stuff certainly seems like it can be complicated, maybe we will try the play it again sports rout so we may be able to get a few different types each for cheaper to see what we will like. Is there any worry of getting 2nd hand discs? Can the be warped or something and cause us problems?

Did sherpa migrate to the new board? He posted a while back on the old board that he had a bunch of discs he was willing to unload. He was very good with advice for me when I first started too.

Well I never said starter discs. I just said start out with a driver and a utility disc.

He wouldn't be bad off with that set. The leopard and shark will get the job done for him and that's a good price for 3 discs.

Chloe and i will be getting something or another this week and ill post what we go for when we do. we may just go for the sets to give us a starting point and see how we actually throw, but i think we will check out play it again sports to see if they have a big variety, if they do and they are in the 5 dollar range then we may just pick out a bunch of different ones.

The ones we found earlier were $10-20, which isn't bad I guess, but for six of them it could potentially be $120 between the two of us.
Hobbies are expensive lol

ebay can be a good place
That Archangle I posted was like 7 bucks too on Amazon. And that's a great disc to start with.
