That would've been seamless if you hadn't said anything. I'm never defending you again.

crossroads is nice, if I remember. And the cover of one step up is great.

One of the most surprising thing about this band is how uniformly awful the stuff all the members did beforehand was.

Scratch that, I heard some Green River stuff once that I thought was okay. But I'm not sure I've heard one MLB or Bad Radio song that I didn't think was shit.

I got that MLB album when I got into pearl jam and was super excited for it. I think I heard it once.

Having said that, Chole Dancer/Crown of Thorns isn't bad.

Otherwise you're totally correct.

Gentle Groove is great! So is Stardog Champion.

I actually do like that song quite a bit, but I don't know if that's cause it's legitimately a great song or it's just been filtered PJ's ability to make something sub-standard sound good. I really shouldn't pass myself off as a pre-PJ expert for all the members, though; for all I know, there could be a lot of gems.

I have to say, though, I'm kind of a sucker for the place that song holds in the PJ canon. It's a cover, but with the bizarre story of how PJ came to be, it felt really special the first time I've heard it. That's why (and this isn't really a fair critique to make), the fact that it gets played relatively often lately is a bit of a drag. It seems too special, in a way.

believe you me's gotta nice vibe to it. i'd call it 'good'. not much more than 'good', but it's not 'bad'

What??? Oh, man. Got to disagree with that. Shangrila, Stardog, Bone China, Stargazer, Captain Hi-Top, Man of Golden Words, Gentle Groove, Chloe/Crown are all five star songs in my book. Golden Words gets six stars, in fact. They have a few cheesy tunes for sure, but their best material is every bit as good -- or better -- than anything PJ has ever released, IMO.

I'm with PryTo. MLB had some awesome material, and legitimately earned quite a bit of praise and buzz while they were around. And no Pearl Jam version of Crown of Thorns will ever enter the same stratosphere as the original. I appreciate the effort, but Ed will never come close to touching what Andy Wood was able to do with that track.

I think it's an entirely fair critique.

I do miss the days when it seemed as though the band treated themselves and their work with a kind of reverence. Part of that was the playing of a song like Crown of Thorns was in itself a special event reserved for nights when the band really felt it was justified. It's disappointing in some respects to see how frequently it appears these days, particularly since they added the Chloe Dancer intro (which Ed really struggles with).

Which, of course, is a view shared by everyone in the audience. I know my reaction the few times I've heard it was 'man, I wish they would have saved this song for some other show with other people because playing it for me here, now, really cheapens it.'

It looks like they played this about once every 5 shows this last tour, so it's not like this became alive, either.
