it just didn't stand up to repeated listens. i wonder how it would have turned out if it had been recorded between 94 and 2003

But it's so dark! So moody!
Ed even sings about feeling "down so low", it gives the song a real...you know...down and low vibe.
Dark and moody.
Ugh.
Whipping, clearly.
this is kind of a dumb critique. Of course what people like about pendulum is its dark and moody feel. What people like about Blood or go is its loud aggression. What people like about sleight of hand is its lost and lonesome feel. That's the point of the song. People like it because they feel it is executed well.
When people remark sarcastically on how dark and moody "Pendulum" is, the implication is that 1) it's not really that dark and moody, and 2) that contrived attempt at moody darkness is all there is to the song. At least that's what I mean.

It's pretty hyper-critical in RM land... I think even if PJ were making every effort possible to please you fuckers, holding planning meetings daily just to be the perfect band for you personally... there would still be pissing and moaning...
Sure, rail on Sirens... It may be cheesy dad cock schlock rock Bon Jovi meets Sting pussy-whipped nonsense to some of us... but I do think they're proud of it, and should be, because it means something to them...
But pick on Pendulum... and their 'formula' for putting a record together... Well, fucking DUH! It's a pattern because that's who they are... It may look different and not sound as kickass as we thought it once did... but LB is a great record for what it is... and Pendulum getting picked apart is the last thing I would have thought of before popping in here...
I'm scattershooting here, but Jeez! You people are not an easy bunch to please.

At first glance I thought that read Bon Scot and I was gonna give you a telling, but then I spotted my mistake and I don't care anymore.
Anyhoo, re-listenned to both of these before voting. I actually really like Pendulum, it's kinda cool. Whipping is still a pretty simple choice though, even if just for Dave A's drums alone.

Instead they're trying to be the perfect band for dumbass PJ fans.

Yep. My favorite version by far. Dave's drumming is killer, too

I think Pendulum is a good song.
Just like most post RA Pearl Jam, it is missing that final layer of paint to make it a great song.
Whipping does rompous rocker better than Pendulum does an existential head hanger.

Pendulum is a top tier song on LB. Whipping is a mid-range song on Vitalogy... I've lived with Whipping longer. So there's a comfortable familiarity to it, but there's also a sense of old age. Pendulum is one of the best songs on the last three albums, I think. Whipping is not one of the best songs on the first three albums. Both songs are moody. Both achieve their goals. Both have evocative lyrics. Both have trite moments. Hmmmm....
I like Pendulum more. Or I should say, I get more enjoyment out of it. Vote for Pendulum.

Pendulum's one that I appreciate much more as a concert opener than a studio cut. I thought it was a great opener this past tour, and they should definitely keep it in the rotation. Pendulum into Release, specifically.
I still like the studio cut, but there's something artificial about its production that started to bug me the more I listened to the album.
Whipping was my vote for this, btw.

I know there's very little love for LB, in general. But I really thought most everyone around here at least liked Pendulum, even if they don't love it. I also did not know that Whipping was the new song that everyone agreed to love all of a sudden.
Cam down, everyone, of course I'm kidding! But, seriously, I didn't now Whipping had such a strong fan base.

Whipping is a great rocker, for sure, but there's nothing about it that stands out (to me)... I like the production value in Pendulum... I also love it live as an opener into another opener... It just sets the mood the way Release, LR, or Oceans used to... Those are reasons enough to give it the nod...
