How many do you have now?
Just 1, but I have to share it with the entire newsroom.
Will you bring with you when you sleep over?
I already had my day with it. Now it's on my boss's desk.
You can bring him too.

What an unfortunate slight.

This bit led to my wife and I having a conversation about our own childhood public school sex education. She grew up in the suburbs of St. Louis and had no health course, only a short video about periods (too many Catholic parents). I grew up in a tiny town in Nebraska and we had a whole quarter dedicated to health/sex ed stuff. I fond that very interesting, but not entirely surprising.

I mostly went to DOD/military schools growing up and they were extremely graphic and detailed. I can remember instructors putting condoms on fruit, details about abortion, graphic pictures of STDs and lots of talk about homosexual sex. I would guess that was because of the AIDS epidemic.

That makes sense.

I went to Catholic school, so once a month we had a class called "Choices" that would replace gym class. 95% of the time, we talked about alcohol and drugs (we had DARE for a while, but our DARE officer left the force in disgrace [for selling drugs to kids] and put a bullet through his head), but every once in a while we'd be given a handout about how sex is God's gift to married couples, and how it's a special time for them to be connected with God. So, yeah.

I remember film strips in middle school. In sixth grade one day the boys watched a film strip about what happens during puberty and the girls watched their own in a different class room. The seventh grade films were a little more graphic supposedly but I missed that day for one reason or another. In eighth grade it was another film strip. The boys & girls were still separated but it was a big deal because it was the same film strip. However it was just about STDs. It was produced by Disney and had an animated rubber in a military like outfit named Captain Condom.
I honestly don't remember any formal sex ed in high school. There was a freshman health class and one day we talked about various diseases, very similiar to the discussion the year before. In sophomore biology we talked about eggs & sperm & fallopian tubes.
At least it was just the facts, I don't remember anything coming up about abstinence only or waiting until marriage.

Seriously though, that 15 second clip you see of Pam Stenzel is exactly what the entire videos are like. Just 45 minutes of her yelling at you and scaring you against ever taking off your pants. And she would mock your feelings of love.

The parents at my wife's school got upset about bracelets they were handing out during health class that said, "Pants up for safety!" Somehow they thought that was too flippant and inappropriate. So they brought in a more conservative company that handed out color changing pencils that had an abstinence-based message, which meant the students spent the rest of the day jerking their pencils off to warm them up and change color.
