Kubrick is maybe the best example for your case, I think. I can totally get on board saying Kubrick is a masterful director with a distinct style that doesn't cast an inescapable shadow over the film itself. Kubrick and David Lynch both are guys that, I'm pretty sure are/were legit geniuses, who have expressive and distinct styles, but don't get in their own way.

I would lump Inarritu in that category, for sure. Cuaron, while I still LOVE what he does, is maybe the bridge between the two. He does get in his own way sometimes, but I think, on the balance, he finds the right choices.

That's all totally fair. Again, just agree to disagree on the quality/talent of Innaritu and Cuaron specifically.

The Pianist is great but Polanski’s style appropriately takes a bit of a step back because of the daunting material. Make no mistake: it’s still very much a Polanski movie, but…you get what I’m saying.

It's really lovely. And a good example of how TV is working its way more toward the cinematic experience. But it's weird. And flawed. But overall, I found it haunting and something I know I'll revisit.

Mr. Brody did not like Birdman, and after our conversation yesterday, I imagine you'll have a similar point of view. Here's a brief snippet from his (your) review:

Haha, no, but I like Richard Brody. He's one of only two critics worth reading, I'd say (the other being Armond White). We don't always see eye to eye, though.

Brody's review is well written and thought out. He's coming from a biased and (I think) faulty a priori assumption. So I don't agree with some of what he says. But it's a good review, even if I disagree.
