I had that feeling when i first listened to the album but you need to understand; Binaural doesnt need that at all. Its rocking in its own world. Gods dice is a perfect song for that.

I thought it was horribly thin and anemic..

Chorus is still awful
I hope Stip didn't just call the chorus to Sad 'awful'

yeah, but consider the source

I'd forgotten how much the Blake mixes sounded like a band that had gotten about half way through a sonic reinvention, then just decided to call it good because gosh darn it we already have the tour rescheduled. Insignificance sounds like the Pearl Jam equivalent of a "we're almost to the breakthrough" demo, like some of the U2 Salome stuff.
Likewise, the Brendan mixes sound like an attempt to cover whatever was making the songs different up and re-rawkify them.
Man, this record really could have been something. Giving up the ghost and not seeing it through was the first step towards hearing the sirens.

Gods' Dice isn't even on the original tracklist at all, so the band had envisaged the opening three tracks as Breakerfall > Insignificance > Evacuation. I like it much better that way too.

That said, I think I like the Tchad Blake mix better in almost every single case. He was certainly looking for something new to say with the band's sound, and it's all pretty removed from their usual "look how powerful and tight everything is" dealo, but man....each song starts to feel just a step or two away from being something really interesting. It feels a lot more appropriate to the type of music being captured.
Compared to that, the O'Brien renditions feel quirkless, square, and tired.

I think it's hitting the climax too early. It's like trying to put Rearviewmirror as track 2 on Vs. Insignificance is the high point of the record, and it works perfectly as track 7. It ends big, and there's no way to top it with an uptempo track; they go way back in the other direction, with Of the Girl working perfectly as a side b track 1 kind of thing.

I don't know if I liked it--just that it was interesting.

I wasn't able to keep listening, and so I'm not sure how it impacts the rest of the album. You could be right.

I really disliked Thin Air into NAIS, but NAIS into Fatal was an excellent combo

It's possible I'm too used to it being where it is. It just feels too big to be that early.
One thing I like about the official Binaural start is that Breakerfall, Gods Dice, and Evacuation get in and get out quick. It's like when PJ will run through a bunch of barnburners early on, then start jumping all over the place stylistically. The beginning of Binaural feels the same way. You're going to go to some relatively uncharted territory for the band, so you have these quick hits at the beginning to get in the mood.

Im not a huge fan of this original tracklist. The flow isnt as interesting. In theory it seems nice having all of those moody pieces clumped at the end but in play it just doesnt have the same effect.
I truly believe what bInaural became was the best choice.

That's my other issue. You have all the moody, slow, dirgy pieces in a row and I feel like it doesn't necessarily service them well. Don't get me wrong, the strength of the songs overcomes tracklisting issues, but I think a little more diversity between up and down tracks is better overall.

I think the commercial tracklist is the best we can do with the recordings/mixes we have. But I'm in the McParadigm school of thought on what Binaural could have, nay should have, been. A moody, atmospheric double album that didn't pussy out on itself.

Did they have enough for a double? I mean, they probably got closer on Binaural than they ever did, but I'm not sure they had quite that much material, at least that we know of.

McP's album is how I listen to Binaural.

I think the original (Gods' Dice-less) tracklisting is really the best presentation of that material, I really enjoy the (quite daring for Pearl Jam) upside/downside feel.
