I agree with Stip...the transition from Sometimes to Hail, Hail is a bit jarring and does startle me to this day.
Still, I love the opening four tunes...perfection.

I think the hail, hail album cut is one of the best examples in the PJ catalog where the studio recording is vastly superior to the live versions.

Aside from Smile, I'm on board with that. Never got into that tune. Seems like they tried to be Neil Young and failed a bit.

That is a strong performance, you are correct. Jack Irons is probably really the determining characteristic here.

The last truly great PJ album. I think Mankind should have been a B side though. Its an ok song, but hurts the flow imo. Present Tense into Mankind is not cool. Present Tense into Im Open would have worked better. Also love the B-sides for this album. Would love to someday hear a studio version of Falling Down (it has to exist right??) and a No Code demo of Brain of J.

agreed actually
Mankind seems kind of petty after a track like Present Tense. when it came out I was glad to hear stone sing a song, and kind of appreciated a basic powerchord rocker - but when I hear it now, Mankind just comes across as kind of shallow, especially after the dust has settled on present tense, which is present intense.

I think the last truly great PJ album was Yield, although I do prefer No Code.

It was my College (called CEGEP here in Quebec) years... so you can see the mood i was in when listenning to this album...
This is were a went on a cool trip to Ottawa at a Ticketmaster to buy some Toronto show tix... slept on a "Laser Quest" dock just in front of the TM store... and then on an Epic journey from Montreal to Toronto... at the Maple Leafs Garden...
Just a great album... the one i remember listenning to the most...
Always requesting Hail, Hail at all my shows (got it again at Worcester I!!!!)... then Ed goes "Wanna hear Red Mosquito?" at Wor I... oh my god this is so cool!!! A 38 years old teen just tearing it apart in the pit!!!!
Still calling my college parts each month to a PJ listenning party... and No Code is always being played from start to end ... no album shuffle or No Code shuffle... always the way it was meant to be...

Yeah, No Code came out my frosh year of college, so it's forever ingrained in the minds of my poor roommates and friends, many of which were not PJ fans.

Binaural was the last great Pearl Jam album, even if No Code is better. No Code is one of the few albums that seem timeless, it gets better for each year that passes.

Because Binaural is arguably some of PJ at their best mixed badly with some of their less memorable songs. A mix that as a whole works less than say Vitalogy and No Code do.

One of the best transitions in the catalogue. Definitely has an effect that no other transition on a PJ album manages to achieve.

I agree with this. Binaural was a potentiallu great album diminished by a terrible track selection. Including Sad and Fatal at least and excluding some of the weaker tracks and it couldve been great. Parts of it are great. Yield is very good, but not great in my opinion. No Code to me is the last album that was greater than the sum of its parts. Since then each album is just a group of songs, some better than others.
