Nothin' huge or anything. Everyone in my family chips in a little and the winner takes the pot. $140 this year.

Pffffffffffffft.
Good luck, I guess.

Talking biggest Oscar snubs ever for best picture with my buddy. Three that stood out for me.....
Good Will Hunting (Titanic won).....this is fucking laughable
Dead Poets Society or Field of Dreams (Driving Miss Daisy won)
Raging Bull (Ordinary People won)

Titanic is probably better than Good Will Hunting.
But as I've said before, if you look to the Oscars as any kind of measure of quality in any way, you're doing it wrong.

Yerp.
And I adore GWH, but Titanic absolutely deserved to win. Also, I like Ordinary People more than Raging Bull.

No. it's probably not. Agree to disagree there. I'm not even a Titanic hater. It was a solid flick actually.
I don't entirely disagree with your second statement. It's a lot like the Grammys.

Joey.
It's Raging Bull!

Raging Bull is really overrated. But to be fair, I haven't seen it in years.

I know, I know. I'm sorry. It's one of my worst traits, but I just don't get all the fuss. It's far from a bad movie or anything. It's got a lot going for it. But I don't think it's the masterpiece everyone else seems to think it is.
Ordinary People is pretty brilliant.

In any case, there are way more egregious Best Picture winners in recent history:
-12 Years a Slave
-The Artist
-Crash

Now we're back on track!
I adore The Artist. And I'm really into Crash also (but in fairness I haven't seen it since it first came out). Haven't seen 12YaS.

I figured you'd like TA and I understand why people do. But I can't stand it, personally.
I kind of doubt you'd have a strong positive reaction to 12 Years. You don't seem like the type that digs exercises in misery and cruelty.

As a rule, no. But if there's a larger point I can dig it. I'm trying to think of a good example of something that's damaging and miserable and difficult and still totally worth it.

My relationship with movie violence/cruelty/sadism is long and storied
